What is more important discipline or motivation? Motivation not working? Develop discipline! Myths and lies about discipline

  • 07.12.2020

The word coercion is commonly used as something to do with crime and violence. It is the act of forcing someone to do something against their will. In working with human resources, this is natural for two reasons.

First, humans are naturally designed to always try to conserve as much energy as possible while using as little energy as possible. This is the nature of all living things. But, as we know, not even the strongest survive, but those who quickly adapt to new conditions. Therefore, one's naturalness must be overcome for the benefit of natural selection. Those who cannot do it themselves, guided by self-motivation, need coercion, and such are the majority.

Second, the need for security. In Maslow's pyramid, according to the theory of human motivation, safety is the second step after physiological needs. But the desire to achieve the set plans or leave the comfort zone is a violation of security. People have lived for centuries in danger, where they could be eaten or harmed. And only a few hundred years they live in a fairly safe world, but everything is preserved at the level of instincts and prevents us from developing. As soon as there is a threat to a person's comfortable state, he perceives this as a danger.

My definition: coercion is a systemic and demanding action of a manager aimed at an employee in order to achieve results. Similarly, the coach works with the athlete, increasing the effectiveness of systematic and planned trainings, which are constantly analyzed, and based on the analysis, the results are methodically increased.

Coercion consists of different functions, the most basic and important of which are:

  • Planning. It consists in planning the work of an employee, setting goals, objectives, setting targets.
  • Delegation. Setting goals and objectives for the employee through the transfer of functions and responsibilities.
  • Control. It consists in analyzing the results of work, developing measures to smooth out deviations.
  • Coordination. Ensuring employee work setup and execution of activities.

In my practice, I made the discovery that all this is achievable with the development of the company as a whole, the leaders, and then the employees, such a quality as exactingness.

It happened while working in a company where there was no executive discipline at all. Tasks were set, but their implementation did not depend on my set goals. managerial functions. Employees simply did nothing, carried out vigorous activity, did only things that were pleasant to them and completely unimportant for achieving results. When I came home one day tired and disappointed in my work, my five-year-old son met me. Asking me about my day and why I am so tired, after listening to me he said that he knew what to do. « Put such employees at the table, and while they do not let them go watch cartoons! » - Having said this, he turned around and went to watch the cartoon.

During this period, he intensively prepared with a tutor for school. Then I realized that the difference between the motivation of employees and the motivation of children is that a child cannot be fired. Therefore, results can be achieved by exactingness, put at the table and forced to complete tasks.

But how can you be as demanding as possible without being despotic?

What is discipline

Recently, especially in the context of the crisis and the activation of training companies against this background, the topic of discipline has surfaced with renewed vigor. Everywhere they write and say that discipline is much better than motivation. Any motivation is short-term, the carrot shown at the end of the path is only interesting until it is reached and eaten. Then I want more, if there is no carrot, or according to the results, it is already clear that if you don’t get a whole carrot, then the incentive disappears to go further. Discipline, on the other hand, allows you to achieve results in any situation, even if the benefit is not large.

In addition, the topic of self-motivation began to emerge, how discipline is more productive than finding motivation to do something. And all these words are true, I will not argue with them. Discipline is actually important and more important than motivation, with only one caveat: motivation is part of discipline, it is a tool of discipline. And even self-motivation is part of maintaining discipline, as a tool for additional stimulation to achieve goals.

I think such a statement will cause a lot of discussion and controversy, but let's figure out what discipline is in a company.

The definition of discipline is very simple - the rules of conduct for an employee that correspond to the norms adopted in the company or the requirements of the rules of procedure. Strict and precise implementation of the rules adopted by the management for implementation.

But this definition, in my opinion, is not enough. The prescribed rules of conduct, norms and routines are not sufficient for discipline.

There are companies in which there are no internal labor regulations or any regulations, of course there are few of them. Most companies have a number of internal normative documents and discipline means compliance with the rules in these regulatory documents regulating the obligations of the parties employment contract. It is very simple on the one hand, to follow the existing rules of conduct. However, companies with internal regulatory documents cannot boast of well-functioning work with discipline in the company.

At the same time, a number of companies without labor regulations and internal regulations have, at first glance, a fairly pronounced discipline. But there are problems there as well. And all because the discipline itself does not work, it works only in the system. On the one hand, it is supported by knowledge and methods, on the other hand, it is regulation. There is also a third side - this is the regular management of interaction with employees, which determines the performance discipline. Performing discipline involves the execution of planned targets, instructions, orders, resolutions and decisions on time.

Let's look at examples.

Example No. 1: Director - Colonel

The owner of the company with 15 branches, he is also the director of the company and a former colonel of tank troops.

On the one hand, given the past of the owner, the company seemed at first glance to be quite disciplined. Given the military discipline, all offices were clean, all employees were neat and dressed in the same style, answered in a certain form and appeared at the same call of the owner. On the other hand, as a person who is interested in successful experience other companies and being in negotiations with the owner of the company and his deputy, I arrived at the central office 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the working day. The secretary offered to sit in the reception area, where I chose a seat overlooking the main entrance to the office. I want to note that a number of employees were already at the workplace, as was the secretary, who kindly received me in the reception. But the rest of the employees appeared at the door of the company after the start of the working day. Ten minutes late, the deputy owner appeared. Next is the owner.

The company had excellent interaction management. Given the professional background of the owner of the company, the management of interaction with employees, which consists of coercion, was built successfully according to the army norms and consisted of delegation and control. But there was no planning and coordination. In addition, the work was unregulated, and there was no knowledge and methods for organizing work either. The company worked on the enthusiasm of the owner, when he appeared, the work began, as soon as he was not at the workplace, the work stopped. The same thing happened in the mornings, the quality of coming at the wrong time of the owner of the company, enjoyed by the employees. After all, he was a role model.

But the performance discipline was at the level of the company, all tasks were carried out, all goals were achieved. Sometimes at the wrong time, more often inefficiently and at great expense. This was due to the lack of methods, regulation of work and duties of employees.

Example #2: Putting out fires

The company I worked for. It had constant problems with executive discipline. At the same time, there was a lot of knowledge and techniques that were not fully implemented. Each of them was working, but due to executive discipline, it was constantly not possible to complete at least one project. In addition, there was no regulation. There were only two orders in the company for eight years of existence, which were also not executed. The head of the company was passionate about training and introducing knowledge in the company. In turn, the implementations were unsuccessful, and the work of the entire company was similar to the constant extinguishing of fires that arose in one place, then in another. And the climax: it was not clear who was responsible for what and what he was doing.

First of all, a legal department and a debt collection department were created. The problem solving algorithm was as follows:

  1. Regulation:
    • writing job descriptions.
    • creation of regulations, starting from the places where fires most often occurred (labor regulations; safety orders; credit policy; drawing up contracts and primary documentation; drafting contracts for liability; inventory regulations);
    • company orders;
    • document management system.
  2. Management of interaction with subordinates - was put on planning, delegation, control and coordination.
  3. Combining the company and departments to achieve goals.
  4. Changing the motivation of employees.
  5. Consistent implementation of work methods for planning and managing company resources.
  6. System maintenance.

I have repeatedly read the statements of the great athlete and actor Bruce Lee, I admit that I do not agree with many of his statements, but the rest so accurately and vitally convey my life principles and the fundamental laws of this world that I would like to share a statement about discipline: “Discipline is it is not a limitation of freedom. This is cutting off everything superfluous.

Discipline is not a limitation, it is a way to achieve a result in the shortest way. Discipline as a concept in our heads exists by itself, and many put it higher than motivation and coercion. But, in fact, discipline is a system that consists of coercion, motivation, regulations, rules, paradigms, methods and planning. All this in combination makes it possible for us and our employees to focus on the result, not to be distracted by something superfluous, but to go forward according to the planned path and get exactly the result that we need.

Are we masters of our own destiny? Only if we have the freedom of choice. If we can choose what is really useful for us, and not be led by instincts and bad habits. And that's real freedom.

Discipline and motivation This is what helps us make the right choice.

But what is more important - motivation or discipline?

There is no definite answer to this question. For it all depends on the situation (but at the end of the article I nevertheless made a choice in favor of discipline and justified why).

See how it turns out. There are 2 scenarios.

1⃣ The first is when we are engaged. In this case, there is no need to force ourselves to do something. On the contrary, we strive to do it ourselves. Sometimes even

2⃣ The second is when we do what we don't like. Then there is no need for willpower. Discipline is what will move us forward. And even in a situation with what you love, sometimes you simply cannot do without self-discipline.

From all angles we are told about motivation. We tend to think that we need motivation to do anything. But, dear readers of SILS, this is not always the case.

Remember how many times you wanted to. Did your motivation help you? Yes, the will was also not enough, but this is already being solved. Below you will read detailed recommendations for correcting this situation. In the meantime, let's get back to what to do when there is no motivation and is not expected. Friends, in fact, everything is impossible to be banal.

In such cases, you just need to take it and do it. Do it with discipline and

For often the worst form of procrastination in taking action is to wait right mood. If you wait until the desire to act finally comes, then you risk never reaching the goal.

Waiting for the right mood can ruin? all. To prevent this, you need to learn to separate feelings from actions.

If you need to do something but don't want to, then just get started! After all

Motivation is not always the surest way to achieve results. Real life from time to time requires us to perform actions from which we do not experience spiritual uplift. Even in what you love? routine that does not excite us. If we can't delegate it to someone else, then we still have to do it. That's when discipline comes to our aid.

Human self-discipline is the ability to act regardless of the emotional state. This is a very important skill that helps to succeed in this life.

It is discipline that helps to run in the morning, do exercises, play sports, eat right, take care of yourself, develop and improve yourself.

How to develop discipline?

Discipline is like a rope or a cable. Have you ever seen what they are made of? From small, thin threads. Each one breaks easily. But together these threads become very strong, reinforcing each other!

So it is with will. It's made up of little habits that don't mean anything on their own. But their action accumulates, and soon you become like a god. Of course, this is an exaggeration, but remember, have you met people with iron self-discipline? ? Have you felt what a huge inner strength is hidden in them? That is it.

Each of us can become the owner of a pumped discipline.

The will can be pumped in the same way as our body with brains. Correct and regular actions will make you a man with an iron will. To do this, you need to build habits, starting with less important, small things and gradually increasing momentum.

✅ Find some small action that you want, but are constantly lazy to do. And start doing it regularly. Through I do not want, through I can not. It should be short and insignificant so that you don't have to push yourself too hard. For example, a 5-minute charge. Make it your habit. And then the real magic happens.

You will find that this little habit does not exhaust you, but rather increases your inner strength and self-confidence. It happens for the simple reason that you finally

And here are 2 more little tricks. Will is a limited resource. Therefore, it is best to perform energy-intensive activities in the morning. ? For in the morning we have a full supply of energy, so doing everything is much easier. Second, make it a habit to break big things into small tasks. Even if you do not complete the whole thing, you will still move forward.

The main rule for the development of discipline is regularity. The actions we repeat day after day accumulate. And if you've had to force yourself to do something, will it take a little time and you'll find yourself doing it? automatically, without the use of willpower. And now you can spend the increased and released reserve of volitional energy on something new. It turns out constant development!

Myths about discipline

1. Discipline is incompatible with creativity. Discipline is the best friend of inspiration, which contributes to the achievement of results in creative activity.

2. Discipline is slavery. Discipline represents self-control, which is true freedom. You do not depend on external circumstances and on your mood, you do your job no matter what.

3. Happiness and discipline are incompatible things. Perseverance is always rewarded. Any physical activity increases the secretion of the hormone of happiness. Discipline can bring a person to happiness through the achievement of results and the achievement of goals.

CONCLUSION

Do not try to solve all your affairs with motivation. Sometimes you need not to wait for inspiration, but just take it and do it. Discipline will help us with this. This is one of the main success factors.

I met brilliant people who have not achieved anything in this life. I also talked with ordinary people who do not have special talents, who, thanks to perseverance and self-discipline, get everything they want.

What conclusion did I draw? Yes, motivation and discipline complement each other. But if you choose between motivation and discipline, I would choose the latter. Discipline is better and more important than motivation. Because motivation comes and goes (and you can wait a lifetime for it), but self-discipline will always be with me.

Many psychologists, personal growth coaches and many others say that without motivation there can be no normal existence of a person. In fact, any sphere of life "works" to its fullest, precisely because of motivation. But, unfortunately, all kinds of motivational videos, books and trainings work after a while. In order for a person to feel the changes, it takes quite a few days, and changes do not always take place. Of course, to argue that motivation does not actually play any role in a person's life is extremely stupid.

We are all different, and training can affect a certain person, and he will really understand something for himself. But in most cases, motivational training may not help. A person simply does not see the changes, or the changes are simply insignificant. Today we will push aside motivation as the engine of a person's life progress and put discipline as an "opponent" to it. Why is she worse? And why do some people think discipline is just slavery? Let's figure it out.

Motivation is like a drug

Today on the Internet you can find a lot of various literature, videos, various videos from people who are trying to tell how motivation has affected their lives. But why, for some, this kind of literature and video has actually become a curse that has given rise to a great many different dissatisfied personalities who dream of going on the trip they dreamed of, but, despite this, have not moved a single step. ?

Why do many people, after absorbing a certain “dose” of motivation, become more and more depressed? A person who is already not particularly decisive wakes up with a sense of his own helplessness, because what is so zealously promoted by many psychologists and trainers simply does not work. In order to simply move from the "dead point", a person again begins to attend courses, go to trainings, and everything starts in a circle.

Some simply do not have the strength (desire?) to admit to themselves that this path does not work. What can help us to reach the goal that we planned about eleven years ago? How to budge and start living, and not stand still?

Illusions and emotions

Motivation is designed to evoke certain emotions in us, and, of course, they must be positive. But who traveled for a long time on some emotions? Motivation is a kind easy way, which does not always work, but, despite this, is popular enough to achieve a certain goal. It can even be said that motivation rather creates in a person a kind of illusion that everything will turn out easily and simply. When these illusions take root tightly in the human mind, a turning point occurs when a certain obstacle appears on the way to achieving the goal. Of course, we all love positive emotions, but the problem is that at some point a person simply becomes dependent on them.

Discipline versus motivation

What is the difference between motivation and discipline? Well, firstly, it’s worth saying right away that discipline does not need a kind of “dose” of emotions. Of course, discipline is much more difficult than motivation. It cannot arise from watching a video, a movie, or reading a certain literature. At the very beginning, discipline in a person is about the size of a pea, and in order to grow, it must actually wade through the “wilds” of fear, despair and the well-known position “I don’t want and I can’t”. But if you help her, then over time she will stop demanding attention from you, but will begin to help.

Myths related to discipline

The first myth we want to debunk is the claim by many that discipline and creativity simply don't go together. A quite logical question arises, did all famous composers, sculptors, painters, writers and so on work only on emotions? Just take a look around and you will see that most of the famous people worked very meticulously and hard to make their brainchild perfect.

The second myth is that discipline is supposedly incompatible with happiness. Happiness lies in the little things, but in order to see these little things, you need to do something. Thanks to his perseverance and work, a person, for example, will definitely see the final result of his work and will be happy that he nevertheless did what he had planned for a long time. It is discipline that can lead a person to that emotional state that motivation “promotes”.

Discipline and motivation on the same level

Without one, there will be no other. Thanks to motivation, we can outline a goal for ourselves, how we will achieve it, and what awaits us on the way to achieving our goal. After that, discipline comes into play, thanks to which a person pulls himself together and begins to put his idea into practice. Motivation is an indispensable friend, because it can remind you why a person needs self-control, perseverance, and so on.

There are two ways to achieve a goal: motivate yourself or develop discipline. You will be surprised, but the first and extremely popular method will not actually lead you to success. Motivation is a crushing mistake. But a less popular way to achieve the goal is able to give instant results. Why is discipline so much more important? Let's talk about it in the materials of this publication.

What is the difference between these concepts?

When a person is looking for motivation, he mistakenly believes that in order to complete a particular task, it is necessary to achieve a certain state. If this cannot be found, you can fall into a stupor. Thus, people make the performance of the task dependent on emotions or physical sensations. As you understand, in this case a downtime is inevitable. The same cannot be said about disciplined activity that does not depend on mood or inspiration. The goal can be achieved surprisingly easily if you separate your activity from being exposed to momentary feelings.

Getting Started with Discipline Development

You will be surprised, but famous writers do not look for inspiration, but work every day for several hours. All of them have an exact schedule, which is unquestioningly observed. Indeed, in order to achieve perfection in something, painstaking training is necessary. You can look at the athletes who are going to conquer the international Olympus. Without daily training, none of them will reach the peak of their form and take the coveted gold. If athletes wait for the best moment to start and look for motivation, they will simply lose all their skills.

Why not wait for the right moment?

However, in ordinary life it is difficult to keep yourself in check. Each of us has a million excuses for putting off important things. No one is aware of the dreaded word "procrastination" that lies around the corner. People are playing for time, like a cat by the tail, and fall into invisible traps. And you just have to start with excuses "I'll do it later", "Today I'm not in the mood", "Maybe I should give up this idea?" The eternal search for motivation is a delusion that it is necessary to do business only in the mode of transcendent mood.

Disconnecting the brain from feelings

Surprisingly, the brain has long decided to get down to business, and feelings always hinder and slow down the process. The only way out in this situation is to disconnect emotions from the mind. Let the brain again become dominant, and feelings only an insignificant addition. You will be on the right path if you can cut the connecting thread between the emotional component and your own actions. It turns out that everything is so simple, and routine processes are only tiring at first. Very soon you will feel an impressive surge of energy and pride in what you have done.

Association with psychological problems

If you still believe in motivation, you have psychological problems. Real life is full of routine processes. It never occurs to anyone to look for motivation in brushing their teeth or washing clothes. There are so many actions that are perceived without enthusiasm every day that it is time to get used to them. Enthusiasm is not needed to perform certain mechanical processes. This fully applies to the performance of work. Of course, fooling around, lying on the couch and playing computer games is much easier than doing something useful. Strange, but enthusiasm arises only when an easy and worthless task looms on the horizon.

Common sense or enthusiasm?

Give up the self-imposed madness of finding inspiration to fill out accounting records. This will never happen. Just turn on common sense and calmly sit down to work. After all, you've done it a million times and made sure it's not fatal. Being engaged in an unloved business, a person mistakenly stands on two opposite poles: he begins to inspire himself with love for work or reproaches himself that he still has not been able to feel feelings for her. Approximately the same emotions visit a person who has a weakness for cakes and sweets. He suspects himself of a weak will and thinks about motivational training. In fact, none of these cases can be considered from the point of view of the search for motivation. This is a normal routine work, and the answer lies in discipline.

What is the danger of motivational actions?

If you manage to find inspiration to perform routine work, know that in this case, pitfalls await you. It turns out that motivation has an expiration date, which is extremely short. Today's inspiration came upon you in great pain, but tomorrow you will have to look for it again. This process is not automated, and you will always manually apply pressure to the handle. Motivation is only useful for achieving specific long-term goals, and it is not suitable for daily routines.

A motor that generates energy systematically

Now let's take a closer look at the proposed alternative. Productivity has nothing to do with emotional state. Only the daily repetition of certain combinational sequences can give good result. In this regard, discipline far surpasses our good-familiar motivation. Trying to reach a state of readiness to perform actions takes too much effort and time. To force yourself to do something, even if there is no desire, means to develop discipline. A clear and well-established system launches a mechanism for the generation of constant energy. Soon a person begins to feel good and forgets about motivational searches. Habits, even subtle ones, help develop discipline. Over time they will bring in everyday life positive adjustments.

Motivation. A very fashionable and often used word in recent times. Shelves in bookstores are littered with books about motivation and success. Watching motivational videos inspires, but life after them somehow does not change at all.

There is a perfectly logical explanation for this. The importance of motivation is exaggerated. It acts like a drug that you get addicted to. Its action is short-term and we constantly need a new “dose” to do anything.

Motivation - on the crest of emotions

What is the purpose of motivation? Raise our mood, cause inspiration, a desire to act. Motivation is like the wind that blows our sails and carries us towards our goal. It's not hard work with paddles.

However, the wind may or may not blow. And it can also blow in the wrong direction for us. You can wait days, weeks for a fair wind instead of rowing yourself where you need to.

And after all, many people sit and wait for the arrival of this motivation in order to do something. Their boat in this sea of life floats away in one direction, then in the other, or simply stands still. Although at the bottom lies a good pair of oars.

Popularity and the power of illusions

Why is motivation so popular? This is all from the desire of a person to look for easy ways. Motivation seems to be the easy way, but it's just an illusion. She doesn't make it easy at all. It just seems to us that when we are motivated, everything is easier and more fun. But on the way to any worthy goal, we meet many difficulties. But if you have only motivation in your bosom, then this is not enough to overcome obstacles. Even the smallest obstacle can stop you because you were not ready for it.

excuse for lazy people

Have you heard the phrase: “I have no inspiration”? Great excuse for lazy people. And for those who do not understand how the unpredictable person of the muse works.

Here's one secret for you. It takes hard work, not motivation, to create something great.

Ray Bradbury has been writing at least 1,000 words every day since the age of 12. Success did not come to him from the first story he wrote. Just like any other famous person.

If you sit and wait for inspiration to come, you can not even try to open a business. Otherwise, it can be closed after a couple of months of such sluggish actions and waiting for motivation. In business, you need something completely different.

This suggests a logical suggestion: give up motivation and embrace the thing that really leads to success - discipline.

Discipline: paddles and sweat

Everyone can move not only under sail, but also independently, taking the oars in hand. Stubbornly, slowly, but straight to the goal. And for this the best assistant is discipline. More specifically, self-discipline. The way you know how to control yourself and force you to do something that you don’t really want to do, but really need.

Discipline does not arise by itself after a book. It needs to be grown from a small sprout, watered and nurtured. More often to overcome yourself, your fears, laziness and “I don’t want to”. Cultivate good habits. Then you can grow it into a powerful tree that will already grow by itself and bear fruit. Any obstacle with trained self-discipline will be nothing.

Myths and lies about self-discipline

Myth 1. Discipline is not about creativity

If you read the life stories of famous people - various writers, inventors, artists, it becomes clear that none of them became successful just like that. Talent is nothing. True greatness lies primarily in hard work. Almost all geniuses worked hard, and did not sit back and wait for inspiration.

Do you know how inspiration actually works? It comes at work. Therefore, the most difficult thing in the work is to start it. And the desire and motivation appear already in the process.

In addition, self-discipline makes us collected, holistic. We no longer constantly worry about some unfinished business, excess garbage, debt, procrastination. A lot of energy is released, which can be channeled in the right direction.

Myth 2. Discipline is slavery

There is another conventional wisdom about discipline. It seems to people almost hard labor, because sometimes you have to keep yourself very strict and follow the schedule. This is not at all like the "freedom" that most people understand. Namely, as an opportunity to do what you want, when you want.

But a friend of mine made it very clear what freedom really is. Freedom is the ability to do what you think is right and necessary. It is following your moral principles. This version, though not so alluring, but realistic.

Myth 3. Happiness and discipline are incompatible.

It seems to us, what happiness can be in limiting yourself? In the difficulties that we specially create for ourselves every day, for example, in sports. Proper nutrition seems to us necessarily tasteless and insipid. Self-discipline is seen as a hindrance to an interesting and vibrant life.

But this is a myth. Sports bring pleasure, because during exercise we release hormones of happiness. And the right food can be delicious if you know how to cook it.

Of course, there are things that do not bring pleasure. Banal daily brushing of teeth, for example. But if this is not done, then serious unpleasant problems await us. They can and should be avoided by such a useful habit that requires a certain amount of self-control on our part.

By the way, in fact, we experience happiness not from the possession of certain things and goods. This is a temporary feeling. We experience happiness when we solve problems, overcome and achieve. That's the way we are.

Do we really need books and videos on motivation then? Yes, they are needed. They remind us what self-discipline is all about. Why do we do this or that action? And it is not external motivation that works best, but internal. Therefore, think about your goals and dreams more often, visualize them.

In general, in this sea of \u200b\u200blife, do not lose the oars and use the breeze wisely. Happy sailing!
