Profession quality engineer description. Quality management: who to work with and is the specialty in demand? Sample resume for quality manager

  • 22.11.2023

A quality engineer is a specialist who manages the quality of products, services or work. Unfortunately, with the abolition of GOST and other mandatory documents, quality in our country has suffered significantly. We all complain about poor products manufactured according to technical specifications, equipment that breaks down quickly, low-quality shoes and products.

Before entering the university, I carefully studied the catalogs of professions, trying to make my choice. There were different options: economist, political scientist, engineer. I wanted to enter technical VU3, as I have always been interested in exact sciences. Since the country needs engineering personnel, the profession of an engineer sounds proud, I decided to try myself in this. Graduated from a technical university (bachelor's degree) with a degree in standardization and certification and a master's degree in quality management.

Oddly enough, the profession of a quality engineer turned out to be in demand, well paid and quite interesting. The work requires perseverance, responsibility, and you need to work a lot with documents and people.

A quality engineer implements a quality management system in an organization to manage quality and nonconforming products.
When I took my first job at a company engaged in the exploration and development of mineral resources, I developed all quality documentation, equipment instructions, and organizational standards from scratch. Since the field of mining is indirectly related to government accounting operations, the requirements for the quality of research are quite high. It is necessary to have a quality system, verified equipment, rules for document management, personnel management, certified measurement techniques, standard samples and standards.

I did the work of testing the equipment and writing instructions for it. The scope of verification includes electrical, geometric, mechanical measuring instruments, and pressure measuring instruments. We also developed measurement methods for various geological studies for the organization and certified them.

At our enterprise, a quality engineer monitors the quality of the technological process for testing rocks, so that all operations are performed correctly and consistently in accordance with the methods, so that all equipment is checked and the methods are certified, the quality engineer takes into account the equipment and reagents, entering the laboratory.

I was successful in my work, and my salary periodically increased, now it is 35 thousand rubles (not in Moscow). With the introduction of a quality system, the work of our enterprise became more streamlined, many problems with customers were resolved and we received state accreditation.

Future plans include advanced training in this area, seminars and development of a related field - metrology (the science of measurement accuracy). I would also like to try myself as an accreditation expert (this work is traveling in nature), I would like to work at the Center for Standardization and Certification, because working there allows me to visit many production facilities and ensure that the quality of our products and equipment is at a high level.

Professional growth can also be achieved in production, becoming a quality director or chief metrologist.

A quality engineer is responsible for the quality of manufactured products and also ensures their compliance with standards and the level of technical development.

Reviews about the profession

“Currently, many enterprises are undergoing certification according to ISO quality standards, which is why specialists with certification experience are in demand. This is a rather labor-intensive procedure that requires special knowledge and skills, because the quality engineer not only accurately describes all production processes, but then implements and maintains the developed standards. As a rule, specialized certification centers help companies at the implementation stage. However, it is necessary to have your own specialist on staff in order to ensure that these quality standards are truly observed in the future.”

Ekaterina Rumyantseva,
General Director of the recruiting company "NeoSTAF".

6. Demand that the management of the enterprise provide assistance in the performance of its official duties and rights.

The profession of an engineer can also be quite interesting and modern. For example, such a position as a quality engineer appeared on our labor market not so long ago, but many large companies, including world-famous ones, have already introduced it into their staff. So the way is open for young specialists, because this work is not only interesting, but also well paid.

What is the essence of the profession

Depending on whether the organization produces a specific product or provides a specific service, the main task of the quality engineer will be constant monitoring of the indicator of perfection, compliance with all standards and characteristics of the product or service. Moreover, today there is the concept of “a set of quality criteria”, that is, the product or service must be of high quality:

  • from the point of view of their potential buyer or consumer;
  • also meet the quality criteria established by modern science and its achievements;
  • and (if the enterprise is focused not only on the domestic market) quality criteria in accordance with export requirements.

List of direct responsibilities of a specialist

If you are offered a position such as a quality engineer, you need to be prepared to take on the following responsibilities:

  • Timely and regularly analyze the information that should be obtained from the production of products (preferably from each individual stage).
  • Follow a unique system of quality indicators approved by the enterprise, which should fully characterize the product being manufactured or the service that the company provides.
  • Carefully study and analyze quality claims that can be made by both internal and external contractors. In large and promising organizations, the quality control engineer is also obliged, based on the results obtained, to put forward for consideration by immediate management options for solving the problem so that similar complaints do not arise in the future.
  • Carefully study all the reasons and bases that lead to deterioration in quality or that do not allow the quality of products or services to regularly improve.
  • Take an active part in the development of various instructions and existing methods that will not only improve quality, but also simplify the process of controlling it.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation that will confirm the fulfillment of the duties prescribed in a document such as the “Job Description”. The quality engineer may also keep some records and reports to make it easier for immediate management to evaluate the results of his work.

Without what knowledge can you become a good specialist?

When selecting a potential candidate for a similar position from among applicants, the head of the company, of course, will give preference to the candidate who will have the in-depth knowledge necessary for a specialist to perform his official duties with high quality. So, the job description of a quality engineer has a subclause that clearly states that a candidate for the position must know well:

  • methodological recommendations, legislative standards that relate to quality management of products or services;
  • technological features of the production of a specific product in which the enterprise specializes;
  • standards according to which it is possible to determine the level of compliance with all product quality criteria and which help classify a certain product as defective;
  • the procedure for checking the quality of materials and raw materials from which products will be made;
  • rules and features of quality control of manufactured products at all stages of production;
  • the procedure for preparing reports, the timing of generation and submission to management for review;
  • labor safety standards.

Personal qualities of the applicant for the position

A quality management engineer is a promising profession, which in most cases is represented in well-developed companies where they can offer high wages to their employees. But to work in such organizations, simply having a wealth of knowledge is not enough; you also need to demonstrate your personal qualities that will set you apart from other potential applicants. The personal qualities of the candidate that are of interest to the manager include:

  • Accuracy and consistency, multiplied by attentiveness. Despite the fact that the name of the profession “quality engineer” sounds quite creative, a person who is extremely responsible, scrupulous, and able to check the same indicators several times must apply for such a position.
  • Analytical thinking. It is this type of thinking that will allow a specialist, based on the obtained indicators, to draw conclusions that are understandable to the manager.
  • Resilience and focus, backed by perseverance.
  • Organizer abilities. Such a specialist has his own subordinates, so there is no way to do without organizational skills, because it is very important to be able to create a small, cohesive team out of individuals that will be happy to work for results.

Where do the specialists work?

As already mentioned, all modern large companies already have such a specialist on their staff. Prudent managers of medium-sized companies also introduce such a vacancy, because they understand that today it is possible to attract the attention of a potential buyer only with the help of the high quality of the product offered, because most other “tricks” are actively used by competitors.

Today there are also government standardization centers where a young specialist can gain experience in a similar position and then (if desired) apply for a similar vacancy in a serious company.

Engineer education

A specialized higher education is the first thing a potential employer wants to see in a resume. After all, a quality engineer will be able to perform his duties well not only when he has experience in the same sector of the economy as the organization that opened a similar vacancy, but also when he has a wealth of relevant knowledge, the quality of which will be confirmed by a diploma. Thus, a specialist’s diploma in certification and standardization or quality management will be most valued. By the way, if you, for example, are applying for the position of “Construction Quality Engineer” and have one of the above specializations and a diploma that confirms knowledge of the specifics of construction, you will probably be given preference. Since each individual enterprise operating in a certain industry has its own specific characteristics, without knowing which, a young specialist without experience will not become a good employee.

Stereotypes associated with the profession

Managers and subordinates already have a peculiar image of such a specialist: a quality engineer must be not just attentive, but even a little picky in order to perform his duties at the highest level. I would like to note that such a quality certainly wouldn’t hurt a person holding a similar position.

A little more detail about remuneration

Depending on the work experience and the capabilities of the company itself, which offers a similar position to the applicant, he can count on approximately the following salary:

  • a young specialist can qualify for a monthly salary of 20,000-25,000 rubles;
  • if you already have experience in a similar position, you can apply for a salary that “starts” at 25,000-30,000 rubles. per month;
  • if you are lucky enough to occupy a similar position in a successful organization in the capital or another large city, then in such a position you can earn about 55,000-90,000 rubles. per month.

If we talk about a similar vacancy in good companies abroad, then you can get about $5,000 a month there.

Prospects

Most employers want to see a young specialist with work experience in such a position, which means that the way is open for a new generation, you just have to try a little, confirm all your advantages over other applicants and successfully occupy a position such as a quality engineer. The job responsibilities specified in the relevant document should be performed diligently and efficiently, then, having gained experience, you can try your hand at the same position, only in another organization that offers better pay. Confident advancement up the career ladder will very soon lead a young promising specialist to the chair of quality director.

Interestingly, most organizations employ women as quality engineers. But the ability to be scrupulous in one’s responsibilities and work in a team has nothing to do with gender. By the way, a quality engineer may have about three subordinates. If this is a large organization, then the staff team can be 15 or even 20 people, depending on the production needs.
