What has changed after replacing one digit in the printer name? I will say right away - enough to write a separate article about this and conduct new tests of performance and print quality.
First of all, one should immediately note the radical difference between the ML-1210 and ML-1250 models: despite the similar dimensions and weight, the first of them is a GDI printer, while the novelty is still a full-fledged model with support for the PCL6 language, which immediately displays printer capabilities beyond the operating systems of the Windows family and guarantees operation under Linux control, Mac OS and DOS. An important fact is a noticeable increase in print resolution from 600 × 600 dpi to 600 × 1200 dpi, which, in fact, translates the novelty into a slightly different class of printers.
In a word, the clothes are the same, but the possibilities are already somewhat different.
Accordingly, the ML-1250 is positioned as a model for small and middle offices, which, however, with a slight excess of the price of ML-1210, does not reduce the attractiveness of buying such a printer for home use.
According to press releases, new model, Samsung ML-1250, began to appear in Russian retail in May this year. I hope that this publication will be timely, and our acquaintance with the new product will help buyers to decide more precisely when buying an inexpensive laser machine, now taking into account the appearance of the ML-1250.

First meeting. Unpacking and installing the software
When unpacking the nice box, I found a set of a printer, a toner cartridge, a power cord, a paper output holder, a CD with drivers, utilities and a user manual in the form of a .pdf file, as well as a quick installation guide.
Getting the ML-1250 ready for use takes a matter of minutes: peel off the protective tapes, insert the paper output holder and the toner cartridge. As with any laser printer cartridge, care must be taken when installing this one: it is advisable not to grab it by the shaft and do not hold it for a long time in the light.

After that, the matter is really small: we connect the power cable, select the type of interface - parallel or USB, connect, respectively, to the AC mains and PC.
Now, after turning on the printer, you can print a control page by pressing the appropriate button on the front of the printer - and you can proceed to install the drivers.

After receiving the first print and making sure that all the software works without problems, I continued, moving from installing drivers to actually testing the device.
Installing drivers and software for other operating systems of the Windows family is a little different. I would especially like to emphasize the possibility of installing the printer on a PC without a CD-ROM drive: in this case, it is enough to insert the supplied disk into another computer equipped with a CD-ROM drive and simply create a set of special installation diskettes. This menu allows you to select the applications of interest to the user - the PCL driver, the USB driver, the DOS RCP utility, or all together. After selecting the necessary components, the desired is transferred to floppy disks (or a floppy disk). The procedure then continues after running the setup.exe file from the first floppy disk.

Okay, lyrics aside. A few words about design features. As mentioned above, in the TTX model, it is possible to increase the printer's memory up to 68 MB. Printing process
In a separate paragraph, I would like to describe the settings and impressions of the printer printing process.
A few words about the toner save mode. It is set in two ways: programmatically, through the "Print Options" menu, or by a button on the front panel of the printer. A little about printing in DOS. This is done using the Remote Control Panel (RCP) program that came with the printer. The utility allows you to configure print settings, select the size and type of paper, margins; print quality, select one of the built-in fonts and its size, set the encoding. The "Cancel / Retry" button acquires an additional meaning when printing from under DOS, since it allows you to "send" a page that has not been printed for some reason again (for example, due to a page jam).
The printer's print settings menu is very extensive. The "Paper" tab allows you to set the number of output copies (up to 999), paper orientation, paper size, manual or automatic feed without the participation of the application.
The "Graphics" tab (Graphics), in addition to setting the print resolution, setting the toner save mode, selecting the graphics output mode (vector / raster) and the halftone output method (specified by the device / fine / coarse / line) also allows using SRT technology (anti-aliasing technology) permissions) select best mode smoothing the edges of characters and images.
Those working from under non-specialized applications will really like the "Output" tab, which allows, for example, to place a document on the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe sheet, display several pages on a sheet at once, or print a poster by dividing the image into fragments.
The following tabs are responsible for improving the output quality of True Type fonts, using embedded fonts, creating and printing "watermarks", page headers (for some reason called "page overlays" in the instructions), that is, all sorts of fine-tuning and printing convenience.
Separately - about the instructions attached to the printer. The fact that the kit contains a Russian-language version is, if I'm not mistaken, a standard requirement of the laws that regulate trade in our country. The undoubted advantage of the instructions is the high-quality translation and detail of the material presented, whether it concerns OS settings for using the printer to work in a network group, descriptions of conceivable and unthinkable malfunctions and methods for their elimination, etc. What is worth at least the most detailed FAQ on using a device with a USB interface or instructions for installing drivers under Linux or Mac OS. In my opinion, one of the most "meticulous" of the instructions I've seen.
About print speed. In order not to receive accusations of bias later, I decided to conduct this scrupulous experiment in accordance with all the rules: on the Internet, on one of the Xerox websites, a sample of 5% filling of a sheet of paper recommended by the company was found (sample in .pdf format - via the hyperlink from the picture, taken).
21 copies of the document were printed at a resolution of 600 dpi: minus a dozen seconds for warming up and forming the first page, the result, let's say, "pure races" was 138 seconds, which gives us about 4.9 seconds per sheet, or about 12 .4 pages per minute. I agree, the test is quite "synthetic", but I think it is sufficient to confirm the maximum print speed declared by the manufacturer.
It took me about 45 seconds to print a test page with a "cold start" (the printer cooled down overnight with the power turned off, turned on with full warm-up), printing the first page when the printer was brought out of standby mode - about 20 seconds.
The next test was to print a mixed document with bitmap graphics and text. The best option for this seemed to me to print out the 138-page Samsung ML-1250 Laser Printer User's Guide. The printout was quite brisk until a page with graphics came across, at such moments the printer "thought", sometimes even for 10 - 15 seconds. However, I think it would be sadism to demand more speed from 4 MB of memory.
Printing a test with a set of vector and raster graphics at a resolution of 1200 dpi took 38 and 18 seconds, respectively, when exiting standby mode and with normal output.
At the end of the introductory part, I will insert a few words about the PCL language.
Printer Control Language PCL, or Printer Control Language, was developed by Hewlett-Packard and is actually a Page Description Language (PDL) that supports scalable font technology - PostScript (from Adobe), TrueType (from Apple and Microsoft) and Intellifont ( from HP). The ML-1250 accordingly supports TrueType fonts. When printing, the printer processor generates a bitmap of the page.
Test results
1. Printing fonts
So, the printout of fonts showed excellent results: almost any font is confidently readable, starting from the fourth size, sans-serif fonts - even from the second (in addition to the Arial typeface, Verdana was also run, with similar results).
The results of printing in economy mode turned out to be really impressive: testing showed that if you work with a font size equal to the fourth and higher, then the difference in the quality of text printing is minimal and "by eye" is almost imperceptible. When working with plain text 10 - 12 pts, in my opinion, you can safely set the resolution to 300 dpi and the economy mode - I will not clutter up the article with additional illustrations, but believe me, this is more than enough even for printing official documents.
In any case, it is worth noting that all printed type material has excellent fill density, sharp edges, not the slightest hint of stripes or other unevenness, which indicates the excellent quality of the printing mechanism.
2. Printout of vector fragments
Alas, not everything is so simple here: if there were no problems with printing vector segments and figures, and comments on the above vector fragments, I think, are unnecessary, there is nothing better to wish for; then printing a gradient is not so simple. While excelling in large fonts, where excellent smooth edges and solid fills were demonstrated, the ML-1250 unfortunately did not produce the best gradient grayscale output.
Honestly, if I started by printing this particular test, then after it I would immediately open the printer and see if I have a cartridge with a ground shaft. Unfortunately, the longitudinal structure of the fill is clearly observed, which cannot be explained except by the old shaft. But the shaft is brand new! There is only one explanation left: print drivers. Perhaps I am too biased and demand the impossible from a monochrome laser printer, but something tells me that the capabilities of this model are not exhausted by current drivers. He's too good at working with fonts to say with confidence: " such gradient printing is all it can do."
3. IT-8 Test Chart Printout
There were two impressions from the printout of the raster image. If when printing a small image (in the first case), overloaded with small details, there was not a better impression, then printing the same image when it was placed on the entire A4 page showed unexpectedly good results: despite the presence of all the same irregularities in the light areas of the image, the detailing is complete, the filling of homogeneous areas is of sufficient quality (please note that the above images are still enlarged, the actual size of the fragment on the test table is 20 × 30 mm).
Conclusion

In my opinion, the purchase of such a model will be fully justified for an average office, where monthly printing requirements do not exceed 12,000 prints specified in the specification. If a laser printer does not have requirements for printing photo masterpieces, and the main tasks are the prompt output of materials made up of text, vector and contrast raster illustrations, I think that buying a Samsung ML-1250 will be one of the good options.

Samsung ML-1250 is a monochrome laser printer designed for use in small and medium offices. The ML-1250 has a 66 MHz RISC processor and PCL6 support, which allows you to print under DOS, and also reduces the load on the PC's CPU during document output. The printer comes with 4 MB of memory, but it can be expanded up to 64 MB. The presence of control buttons on the front panel allows you to quickly perform common operations - canceling a job, reprinting the last document, switching to economy mode.
