Quite, it would seem, recently a personal laser printer Samsung ML-1210. And now, Samsung has already found a replacement for him "in the face" of the new model Samsung ML-1250.

What has changed after replacing one digit in the printer name? I will say right away - enough to write a separate article about this and conduct new tests of performance and print quality.

First of all, one should immediately note the radical difference between the ML-1210 and ML-1250 models: despite the similar dimensions and weight, the first of them is a GDI printer, while the novelty is still a full-fledged model with support for the PCL6 language, which immediately displays printer capabilities beyond the operating systems of the Windows family and guarantees operation under Linux control, Mac OS and DOS. An important fact is a noticeable increase in print resolution from 600 × 600 dpi to 600 × 1200 dpi, which, in fact, translates the novelty into a slightly different class of printers.

In a word, the clothes are the same, but the possibilities are already somewhat different.

Accordingly, the ML-1250 is positioned as a model for small and middle offices, which, however, with a slight excess of the price of ML-1210, does not reduce the attractiveness of buying such a printer for home use.

According to press releases, new model, Samsung ML-1250, began to appear in Russian retail in May this year. I hope that this publication will be timely, and our acquaintance with the new product will help buyers to decide more precisely when buying an inexpensive laser machine, now taking into account the appearance of the ML-1250.

So let's get started.

First meeting. Unpacking and installing the software

When unpacking the nice box, I found a set of a printer, a toner cartridge, a power cord, a paper output holder, a CD with drivers, utilities and a user manual in the form of a .pdf file, as well as a quick installation guide.

Getting the ML-1250 ready for use takes a matter of minutes: peel off the protective tapes, insert the paper output holder and the toner cartridge. As with any laser printer cartridge, care must be taken when installing this one: it is advisable not to grab it by the shaft and do not hold it for a long time in the light.

After that, the matter is really small: we connect the power cable, select the type of interface - parallel or USB, connect, respectively, to the AC mains and PC.

Now, after turning on the printer, you can print a control page by pressing the appropriate button on the front of the printer - and you can proceed to install the drivers.

I hope that the intuitive "poke method" used in such cases is understandable: we will always have time to install the drivers, first we want to get an impression of the device in " lamer mode "[Imagine, there are still people in the world who buy a printer for the first time. :-) Joking aside, but the desire to "plug it in and work, without shamanism" is the most logical and natural, it is written in all potential iron users, apparently from nature].

Ready for any surprises, after USB connections cable from the printer to a PC running Windows XP, I was even somewhat surprised that after the short “tink” sound characteristic in such cases, no further requests for drivers followed: the printer, somewhat puzzled that it was not turned on for work , after a while went into power saving mode, XP also "silenced". What all? Puzzled, I opened "Control Panel/Printers and Faxes" - indeed, the printer is in place:

But where is the claimed PCL6? Moreover, the Corel Photopaint program launched for verification gave everything only "by default":

Nevertheless, even such an "express installation" (in a few seconds!) made it possible to print a picture with a resolution of 600 × 600 dpi.

It's clear. It's time to insert the CD-ROM from the kit into the drive and see what happens next.

And again - no surprised requests - Windows XP was detected correctly, the drivers and software were installed without any questions, and the desired entry was added to the "Printers and Faxes" panel:

After receiving the first print and making sure that all the software works without problems, I continued, moving from installing drivers to actually testing the device.

Installing drivers and software for other operating systems of the Windows family is a little different. I would especially like to emphasize the possibility of installing the printer on a PC without a CD-ROM drive: in this case, it is enough to insert the supplied disk into another computer equipped with a CD-ROM drive and simply create a set of special installation diskettes. This menu allows you to select the applications of interest to the user - the PCL driver, the USB driver, the DOS RCP utility, or all together. After selecting the necessary components, the desired is transferred to floppy disks (or a floppy disk). The procedure then continues after running the setup.exe file from the first floppy disk.

Test Methodology

To check the print quality, it was decided to use already proven test sets, only slightly modified, worked out to test laser monochrome printers:

General impressions of the printer

Yes, lovers of dry descriptions and dry figures will forgive me for some deviation from the facts, but still I would like to convey the subjective impressions of working with this printer. Now I’ll completely hit the lyrics: perhaps some of the readers will understand my thesis that every device that stays next to us for a more or less long time is involuntarily associated with a living being, or, if you like, “endowed” with us a kind of soul. We mentally beg someone "not to fail", someone we ask to move quickly, and so on, in the same vein.

Among the printers that passed through my hands, there were also aristocrats, to whom you can’t turn otherwise than “sir tape recorder” :-); there were capricious bullies with a claim to complete knowledge of the instructions, plus those who gave out a "pack" of their own undocumented whims every day; there were also "diseases" that needed constant care and concern, but the hand did not rise to shoot. Why, printers: you still get goosebumps when you remember the Tefal kettle in the kitchen, which, as it turned out, "always thinks of you." :-)

"Character" ML-1250, after a month of observation of his "behavior" causes a very warm feeling. Simplicity, and at the same time, the practicality of the design, thought out to the smallest detail, paper never chewed, constant readiness for battle, allow us to define the "character" of the printer as "own", friendly. Even when a fairly complex mixed-graphics page is sent to print, the reassuring wink of the green Data LED on the front says, “It will be OK.

Okay, lyrics aside. A few words about design features. As mentioned above, in the TTX model, it is possible to increase the printer's memory up to 68 MB. This is done very simply: turning the printer upside down, you can find a small metal plate covering the 72-pin SIMM slot. 64 MB 72-pin 5 V non-parity 60 ns EDO SIMM can be added to the available 4 MB of internal memory. With the same success, less capacious modules are inserted, there would be a desire and a need.

The printer's visual menu, located on the front panel, informs the user about an error, no paper in the input tray; the "Toner save mode" indicator button informs about the on / off toner save mode, the "Cancel / Retry printing" button allows you not to waste toner on a deliberately unsuccessful page that has already been printed from a PC, or print the last page that was fed; the functional purpose of the "Print test page" button is clear even without my comments. However, the button is also used to control the manual paper feed mode.

About paper. The recommendations here are standard: do not push crumpled, damp paper with staples and other filth into the machine, which can damage the inside of the printer; do not use wrapping, embossed paper, cardboard and other media heavier than 163 g/km. m. In a word, mutual courtesy: you do not feed the printer with garbage, it is cheerful and always ready to help you.

The purpose of the slot at the bottom of the front of the printer is not only to allow the user to choose whether to collect the printed sheets in the top tray or put everything directly on the table. First, using slot output can improve print quality on thick paper (over 90 gsm), labels, envelopes, and labels; secondly, when exiting through the slot, the sheets are folded face up, respectively, they are sorted in reverse order. For an amateur.

Printing process

In a separate paragraph, I would like to describe the settings and impressions of the printer printing process.

A few words about the toner save mode. It is set in two ways: programmatically, through the "Print Options" menu, or by a button on the front panel of the printer. I'll get ahead of myself: the test results showed that it is very difficult to visually distinguish between an "economical" and a "normal" print. By the way, experiments with the inclusion of both software and hardware toner saving modes did not lead to anything special, the savings turned out to be at the "single" level.

A little about printing in DOS. This is done using the Remote Control Panel (RCP) program that came with the printer. The utility allows you to configure print settings, select the size and type of paper, margins; print quality, select one of the built-in fonts and its size, set the encoding. The "Cancel / Retry" button acquires an additional meaning when printing from under DOS, since it allows you to "send" a page that has not been printed for some reason again (for example, due to a page jam).

The printer's print settings menu is very extensive. The "Paper" tab allows you to set the number of output copies (up to 999), paper orientation, paper size, manual or automatic feed without the participation of the application.

The "Graphics" tab (Graphics), in addition to setting the print resolution, setting the toner save mode, selecting the graphics output mode (vector / raster) and the halftone output method (specified by the device / fine / coarse / line) also allows using SRT technology (anti-aliasing technology) permissions) select best mode smoothing the edges of characters and images.

Those working from under non-specialized applications will really like the "Output" tab, which allows, for example, to place a document on the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe sheet, display several pages on a sheet at once, or print a poster by dividing the image into fragments.

The following tabs are responsible for improving the output quality of True Type fonts, using embedded fonts, creating and printing "watermarks", page headers (for some reason called "page overlays" in the instructions), that is, all sorts of fine-tuning and printing convenience.

Separately - about the instructions attached to the printer. The fact that the kit contains a Russian-language version is, if I'm not mistaken, a standard requirement of the laws that regulate trade in our country. The undoubted advantage of the instructions is the high-quality translation and detail of the material presented, whether it concerns OS settings for using the printer to work in a network group, descriptions of conceivable and unthinkable malfunctions and methods for their elimination, etc. What is worth at least the most detailed FAQ on using a device with a USB interface or instructions for installing drivers under Linux or Mac OS. In my opinion, one of the most "meticulous" of the instructions I've seen.

About print speed. In order not to receive accusations of bias later, I decided to conduct this scrupulous experiment in accordance with all the rules: on the Internet, on one of the Xerox websites, a sample of 5% filling of a sheet of paper recommended by the company was found (sample in .pdf format - via the hyperlink from the picture, taken).

21 copies of the document were printed at a resolution of 600 dpi: minus a dozen seconds for warming up and forming the first page, the result, let's say, "pure races" was 138 seconds, which gives us about 4.9 seconds per sheet, or about 12 .4 pages per minute. I agree, the test is quite "synthetic", but I think it is sufficient to confirm the maximum print speed declared by the manufacturer.

It took me about 45 seconds to print a test page with a "cold start" (the printer cooled down overnight with the power turned off, turned on with full warm-up), printing the first page when the printer was brought out of standby mode - about 20 seconds.

The next test was to print a mixed document with bitmap graphics and text. The best option for this seemed to me to print out the 138-page Samsung ML-1250 Laser Printer User's Guide. The printout was quite brisk until a page with graphics came across, at such moments the printer "thought", sometimes even for 10 - 15 seconds. However, I think it would be sadism to demand more speed from 4 MB of memory.

Printing a test with a set of vector and raster graphics at a resolution of 1200 dpi took 38 and 18 seconds, respectively, when exiting standby mode and with normal output.

At the end of the introductory part, I will insert a few words about the PCL language.

Printer Control Language PCL, or Printer Control Language, was developed by Hewlett-Packard and is actually a Page Description Language (PDL) that supports scalable font technology - PostScript (from Adobe), TrueType (from Apple and Microsoft) and Intellifont ( from HP). The ML-1250 accordingly supports TrueType fonts. When printing, the printer processor generates a bitmap of the page.

Test results

1. Printing fonts

So, the printout of fonts showed excellent results: almost any font is confidently readable, starting from the fourth size, sans-serif fonts - even from the second (in addition to the Arial typeface, Verdana was also run, with similar results).

The results of printing in economy mode turned out to be really impressive: testing showed that if you work with a font size equal to the fourth and higher, then the difference in the quality of text printing is minimal and "by eye" is almost imperceptible. When working with plain text 10 - 12 pts, in my opinion, you can safely set the resolution to 300 dpi and the economy mode - I will not clutter up the article with additional illustrations, but believe me, this is more than enough even for printing official documents.

In any case, it is worth noting that all printed type material has excellent fill density, sharp edges, not the slightest hint of stripes or other unevenness, which indicates the excellent quality of the printing mechanism.

2. Printout of vector fragments

Alas, not everything is so simple here: if there were no problems with printing vector segments and figures, and comments on the above vector fragments, I think, are unnecessary, there is nothing better to wish for; then printing a gradient is not so simple. While excelling in large fonts, where excellent smooth edges and solid fills were demonstrated, the ML-1250 unfortunately did not produce the best gradient grayscale output.

Honestly, if I started by printing this particular test, then after it I would immediately open the printer and see if I have a cartridge with a ground shaft. Unfortunately, the longitudinal structure of the fill is clearly observed, which cannot be explained except by the old shaft. But the shaft is brand new! There is only one explanation left: print drivers. Perhaps I am too biased and demand the impossible from a monochrome laser printer, but something tells me that the capabilities of this model are not exhausted by current drivers. He's too good at working with fonts to say with confidence: " such gradient printing is all it can do."

3. IT-8 Test Chart Printout

There were two impressions from the printout of the raster image. If when printing a small image (in the first case), overloaded with small details, there was not a better impression, then printing the same image when it was placed on the entire A4 page showed unexpectedly good results: despite the presence of all the same irregularities in the light areas of the image, the detailing is complete, the filling of homogeneous areas is of sufficient quality (please note that the above images are still enlarged, the actual size of the fragment on the test table is 20 × 30 mm).

Conclusion

Draw a line under research samsung printer ML-1250. The model really differs from its predecessor in model range, Samsung ML-1210 printer: in addition to supporting the new 1200 × 600 dpi mode and the ability to work under a large list of operating systems, the memory of the new product can be increased up to 68 MB, which will certainly have a positive effect on optimizing the printing process.

Despite some irregularities when printing a gradient fill, I would not call the printer's graphics output capabilities "modest". I think that after working with this printer for some time, the user will discover for himself optimal mode printing of mixed documents. In any case, the print quality of font materials is excellent.

The toner-saving print mode is curious; the Samsung ML-1250 has it implemented in an optimal way, with virtually no visual quality loss. It is possible that in most cases users will prefer to constantly use the printer in this mode.

Perhaps some part potential buyers interested in the possibility of printing documents in Russian directly from under DOS. An additional plus when considering as a potential purchase of the Samsung ML-1250 may be the fact that the printer is hardware Russified.

The delivery set is impeccable. Competently and detailed instructions, simple and quick, without any problems, the process of installing the device and drivers will allow any, even the most advanced user, to cope with the operation of this printer.

In my opinion, the purchase of such a model will be fully justified for an average office, where monthly printing requirements do not exceed 12,000 prints specified in the specification. By the way, the instructions describe in detail the step-by-step integration of the printer local network working group. However, due to its low price and, as a result, a good cost of ownership, such a purchase can also be recommended for home needs. If a laser printer does not have requirements for printing photo masterpieces, and the main tasks are the prompt output of materials made up of text, vector and contrast raster illustrations, I think that buying a Samsung ML-1250 will be one of the good options.

Pros:

  1. Thoughtful detailed instructions manual
  2. Excellent print quality for text jobs
  3. Excellent print quality with toner save mode
  4. Hardware Russification, a wide selection of drivers for various operating systems
  5. Low noise performance
  6. Expandable memory
  7. Printing on semi-cardboard (weight up to 163gsm)

Minuses:

  1. Slow warm up
  2. Ambiguous evaluation of graphics print quality
  3. Some decrease in speed when performing complex tasks

For more than 10 years of use, the flight is normal. The only problem is the rubber roller that swallows paper from the tray, you have to help it with pens. Maybe this is a fee for using at one time a printer to print tracks on an exchanged getinax (printed circuit board manufacturing) using thermal paper from a fax machine and an iron.
The problem with the capture of paper was solved, for 400 rubles I bought a new rubber roller in the online store, the actual roller 100 rubles and 300 rubles postage.
Cons: slow printing of JPG images and drawings and PDF documents. From the time of sending for printing to printing of a PDF document (one page) of 1-5 MB in size, it takes from 1 to several minutes, depending on the file size.

Feedback: When connecting the printer via USB or RS-232 port, there will be no difference in print speed.

Pros: Very low cost of printing thanks to a non-chip cartridge, and in general, as I understand it, refilling this printer is the most inexpensive of all for laser printers (we have only 140 rubles in Tolyatti !!!)
Easy to handle.
Very reliable, in 5 years of using it at home, I only had to push the paper a couple of times so that it swallowed it.
Cons: Not fast by today's standards, only 12 pages per minute versus the typical 20 of later models. However, as they say in a wise Russian proverb: the slower you go, the further you will be!
A 100-page document will print in 8 and a half minutes.
Review: Excellent model, it is a pity that it has already been discontinued. Meet in a good second-hand condition - take it for any money, they will pay off!

Pros: Suitable for home use. in fact, this model was produced for SONO use.

There are no memory modules for building up in the printer even in service centers Samsung.

So USB is only needed for those who have a motherboard installed in their computer without an RS-232 port.

Feedback: I got the printer as written off with paper feed problems, after disassembly-cleaning-assembly it works fine :), the mileage turned out to be nothing, a little more than 10,000 prints.
Absolutely hassle-free machine: works with any OS - prints even on Print Screen from a setup a simple NON-CHIP USB and Centronics cartridge - we connect to anything that prints, be it a PC, or some kind of measuring device :) the ability to expand memory up to 68 MB . In general, the ideal of a compact monochrome laser machine.
It's a shame they haven't been made like this for a long time.
If you find a used one, take it.

Printer repair- work to eliminate the malfunction of the apparatus with the replacement of parts and disassembly of one or more components of the apparatus.

The main malfunctions of laser printers

Samsung ML-1250 laser printers have a large number of settings that control the printing process. Often they go astray and you only need to correct them so that the printer continues to work in the same mode. However, there are other breakdowns that can generally be divided into two groups: cartridge failure (70%) and printer failure (30%).

Waste bunker full

If large spots or streaks appear on the sheet from time to time, you can try to clean the processing hopper, because. Overfilling causes the toner to spill unevenly onto the paper.

Paper stops inside the laser printer

main reason- the paper exit sensor is faulty, which is caused by its typical clogging or shutter failure. It is necessary to clean the sensor and adjust the shutter.

Samsung ML-1250 printer jams paper

Usually caused by problems with the feed roller, due to its malfunction or excessive contamination, as well as damage to the bar that guides the sheets or the entire roller assembly. When sheets are jammed when exiting the device, we can talk about a breakdown or skew of the rollers located in the paper ejection unit, as well as the bar that guides the sheets when they are issued by the printer.

Samsung ML-1250 printer does not pick up paper

The main reason is that the paper tray has some damage. A crack in the reverse gear housing breaks the contact between the paper feed mechanism and the spring. An option to remove a breakdown can be a complete replacement of the tray or the elimination of a crack. The paper feed rollers may also be worn out. Cleaning them with a special restoring liquid will help.

The photoconductor is damaged

You can talk about this malfunction if thin lines or large gray spots are visible on the printed sheet at regular intervals. Repair in this case will not help. You will have to replace the drum unit (or the entire cartridge).

Part of the toner (ink) remains on the fingers

The image does not adhere well to the paper. The factor provoking a malfunction is a malfunction of the thermoelement. Also, the cause may be an incorrectly selected thermal film for the device (not a suitable thickness).

Samsung ML-1250 printer won't turn on

The main reasons are damaged input circuits of the printer or there is no voltage in the network. Sometimes a zero reaction is caused by a faulty board, which is responsible for the formation of pulsed currents inside the device and their subsequent distribution to the leading mechanisms. Then the solution would be to replace the board.

Samsung ML-1250 printer does not print

This may be due to breakdowns of internal mechanisms, as well as possible errors in the Samsung ML-1250 laser printer software. If the indicator reporting internal problems does not indicate possible problem, then most likely there was a failure in the driver system or the board responsible for the formation good picture.

Precharge shaft failed

There are two possible reasons:
  1. Charge wear, if when printing on a sheet a gray background is visible with large gray spots randomly located on it. Will only replace the shaft.
  2. Shaft contamination if information is duplicated on a sheet or not all of it is printed. In this case, the shaft cover can be cleaned. If this does not help, you will have to replace the part.

The magnetic shaft is badly worn

As a result, spots of white or dark shades appear on the sheets and printing fails (pronounced heterogeneity of the text). The only way to fix this problem is to replace the shaft.

Clogged squeegee (cleaning blade)

The result is that a gray line appears along the printed sheet. To eliminate the breakdown, the squeegee must be cleaned or replaced if there is no positive result.
