To get a little closer to unraveling the fantastic and mysterious architecture Antonio Gaudi(1852–1926), it is worth evaluating what influenced the formation of the personality and the course of his thought. The architect was born in the Catalan town of Reus. Five generations of Gaudí made copper vats for distilling wine alcohol from grapes grown in the fields of Tarragona. My father's workshop was full of these brilliant vessels made of sheets of copper that looked like sculptures. Antonio went to school at the church community of the monastic order of PRists, which greatly contributed to the development of the mysterious character of the young man, who also suffered from rheumatism since childhood.

The architect has always been a rather closed person, carefully protecting his privacy, meanwhile creating his own incredible, phantasmagoric style, which, although it is customary to attribute it to modern art, even fits into this framework with difficulty. Modern Gaudi skillfully stuffed all national trends: Mudéjar, isabelino, plateresco, churrigueresque. His imagination was based on the ability to absorb all the variety of forms created by nature - jets of water, fibrous structures, roughness of surfaces.

And yet, Gaudi’s life is best spoken about by his buildings, which have become symbols of Barcelona, the city where the master worked and which glorified: the school of St. Teresa, the Palace and Park Güell, Casa Vicens, Casa Mila, Casa Ballo and, finally, never completed Cathedral of the Sagrada Familia. Its author, having spent the whole day on June 7, 1926 at the construction site, went home on foot through the whole city and along the way fell under the wheels of a tram.

In the year of the 165th anniversary of the birth of the great Catalan Moscow Museum of Modern Art together with AUREA Cultura I Art Foundation present a large-scale exhibition "Antonio Gaudi. Barcelona». The project brings together more than one hundred and fifty unique exhibits: furniture, decorative items, designs and models of Gaudi's famous buildings, photographs of the early 20th century provided by the Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia. The exposition will be complemented by the project Forja contemporary Catalan artist and experimenter Frederic Amat, whose installations have already been repeatedly introduced into the architecture of Antonio Gaudi.

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art, together with the AUREA Cultura I Art cultural foundation, present a large-scale exhibition “Antonio Gaudí. Barcelona. The project will bring together more than 150 unique exhibits, including drawings, plans, furniture, decorative elements and, of course, models of famous buildings. The exposition is divided by the curator Charo Sanjuan into five sections, one of which is an introduction, and the remaining four tell about a number of urban objects that have become symbols of Barcelona, such as the school of St. The audience will see unique photographs of the early 20th century by Adolphe Mas, from the Historical Archive of the College of Architects of Catalonia (Barcelona), which were first exhibited in 1910 at the Gaudí exhibition in the Grand Palais, as well as a short film from the Spanish Film Archive showing the opening of the exhibition "Dali and Gaudi in Park Güell. As conceived by the curator, the exhibition at MMOMA will be complemented by the work of another Catalan - the contemporary artist Frederic Amat: his Forja project will become a kind of reading of Gaudí's creations. It is symbolic that the first exhibition of Antonio Gaudi in Russia will be held in the year of the 165th anniversary of the birth of the great Catalan.

MORE ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Curator: Charo Sanjuan

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with the AUREA Cultura I Art cultural foundation presents a large-scale exhibition “Antonio Gaudí. Barcelona. The project aims to trace the creative path of Antonio Gaudí (1852-1926), marking the most notable achievements of the architect's engineering, both during his lifetime and his influence on modern culture in general. The first exhibition in Russia will be held in the year of the 165th anniversary of the birth of the architect. The exposition at MMOMA will be complemented by a project by the contemporary Catalan artist Frederic Amat, who is rightfully considered to be the successor of Gaudí's traditions in media art.

When getting acquainted with the artistic language of the master, many ask the question: “Is Gaudi a genius or a madman?” Being a diligent student, he decisively deviated from the schoolboy understanding of architecture; Gaudi always defended his decisions, especially when they seemed defiantly absurd to the customer. He never clearly followed the rules and canons of a particular style, remembering the motto of the French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc: "Learn from old models, but only critically!" One of the few architects in the 20th century, he explored the language of nature, studied its natural forms, which Gaudí considered to be true art in themselves. The question of the purity of style was not fundamental for him: natural lines and curves, impossible constructions and at the same time harmonious combinations - that was what worried the "architectural madman" of the twentieth century.

Exhibition “Antoni Gaudí. Barcelona" will bring together more than 150 items from the collections of public institutions in Spain and private collections - from plans and drawings of a student of Gaudi to furniture from the House of Calveta and decorative tiles from the Park Güell, created in the late period of the author's work. An important component of the project was 20 photographs of Gaudi's buildings by Adolf Mas, made by him back in 1910 for the first exhibition of the master within the framework of the Salon National Society fine arts in Paris. The documentary and research nature of the exposition is intended not only to acquaint the viewer with the most famous buildings of Gaudi, but also to give the most versatile idea of the genius of the Spanish modern era, talking about Gaudi as a designer and even a religious thinker. The exhibition at MMOMA consists of five thematic sections: a journey through the universe of Gaudi will begin with his biography and rare video materials about the life of the author, subsequent "stops" are devoted to his most famous architectural experiments. One of the reference points of the project was the story of the construction of the School of Teresian Nuns - the most minimalist building of the Spanish architect. This example of simplicity in solutions unusual for Gaudi was associated not only with the modest budget of the building, but also with the requirements of the customer, Reverend Enric d'Osso, to follow the ascetic spirit of the order. The following section of the exposition tells about friendship and joint work with the main patron of Gaudi, Eusebi Güell: their meeting took place at a time when Barcelona was gradually becoming a city of progress and was ready for the reformist ideas of the patron and architect tandem. There is an opinion that it was from the Güell library that Gaudi began to get acquainted with the articles of William Morris, John Ruskin, the poetry of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite poets, which became a real inspiration for him.

It is worth noting that the public expressed conflicting opinions about each of the creations of Gaudí: whether it was the debut House of Vicens, the House of Calvet or the House of Batllo. For example, the Mila House, which is non-standard in all respects, where the floor plans are categorically different from each other, was created many cartoons in which this creation of Gaudí is compared with a “quarry”. Otherwise, the public reacted to the House of Batllo, recognizing it as the pinnacle of Gaudi's skill in designing private housing: it has neither edges nor corners, any of its surfaces are curved. Soon after its construction, Salvador Dali would praise the architect for his “soft calfskin doors”, and a little later, in 1933, he would devote an enthusiastic essay to him for the Minotaur magazine.

The exhibition ends with a beautiful juxtaposition of the Crypt in Colonia Güell with the Sagrada Familia. At the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries, as a result of orders of a religious nature creative activity Gaudi has grown into a stage of philosophical reflection, spiritual being. Researchers of Gaudi's work believe that the Crypt became the harbinger of the famous Sagrada Familia Expiatory Temple. The development of the Crypt Güell coincided with the start of the construction of the Sagrada Familia, thanks to which the buildings link similar architectural solutions. For example, both projects include a number of towers: however, in the case of the Church, they were planned to be mundane and heavy, while the towers of the Sagrada Familia came out slender and directed to the sky.

Project Antoni Gaudi. Barcelona” will be a continuation of the MMOMA program for the implementation of large-scale international exhibitions, as well as the result of cultural cooperation between Russia and Spain. The exhibition will allow viewers not only to immerse themselves in the world of the architect's fantasy, but also serve as the basis for continuing research activities aimed at studying the work of masters of foreign art of the twentieth century. Within the framework of the exhibition, a number of educational events for adults and children will be held, and a catalog about the life and work of the author will be released by the opening of the project, which can be purchased at MMOMA ART BOOKSHOP.

It will also be possible to make a trip to Antoni Gaudí's Barcelona outside the Museum: a Spanish set in Gaudí's style has been created especially for the exhibition in the Grand Cru wine cellar chain. Guests will be able to taste wines and snacks inspired by the architect's work and his personal taste preferences. It will be possible to assess the influence of Antonio Gaudí on the architecture of Moscow and test your knowledge of the history of the capital's Art Nouveau with the help of a unique interactive quest, the route of which was created by the curator of the exhibition, the team of the Museum and Street Adventure.

The brainchild of Zurab Tsereteli at Petrovka 25 is a museum of modern art, or rather, one of the four buildings allocated by the Moscow authorities to the president of the Academy of Arts under their patronage. The department in question occupies a historic building, and the museum entrance pretty much changes its appearance.

Considering the entrance to the museum, one should note the massiveness, even the bulkiness of a simple architectural element. Wedge-shaped stone blocks stylized as antiquity with imitation of rock carvings hang over the entrance, completely violating the appearance of the building of the late 18th century, conceived by the great Matvey Kazakov. The fact is that due to the neighborhood with the temple on the opposite side of the street, the architect placed the front part of the building in the courtyard and now could not recognize his creation.

The appearance of the courtyard of the building at 25 Petrovka Street has been changed beyond recognition by the Museum of Modern Art. This is clearly confirmed by a slider with photographs of Tsereteli's works placed on the square adjacent to the building. The stylized images of his characters, characteristic of the sculptor's pictorial manner, and in large numbers, leave an ambiguous impression. Whoever Zurab Konstantinovich portrays, it turns out something massive and rather conditional.

And Tsereteli's sculptures depict the most different people, images are present and real, and fictional, and generalized. Shostakovich still looks like himself, but Vysotsky is almost a caricature. Don Quixote and his squire are generally assembled from scrap metal, I would like to believe that this is not the creation of the main artist of the country. The remaining sculptures represent abstract participants in folk games, musicians and townspeople of old Georgia.

The front staircase of the mansion built by Kazakov for Gubin, a breeder from the Urals, has not suffered from modern trends in art. Gray stone steps, classic white stone railings, an arched entrance and the same window openings at the top have been preserved.

Rising to the museum halls, visitors have time to take a break from the oppressive impression that many of them have in the courtyard of the mansion. The sunlight penetrating from the outside not only illuminates the way ahead, but also lifts the mood before viewing the exhibition exposition.

When climbing the stairs, visitors are presented with ceiling and wall paintings made in a rather rare painting technique. Various military symbols and attributes, plant elements and other things are depicted according to the creator's intention. The paintings are similar to stucco or bas-reliefs, which is achieved using a special decoration technique.

Drawing in the grisaille technique, which means the use of paint of only one color, allows you to get a three-dimensional effect due to different shades. This technology is used not only in painting walls and ceilings with paints, but also in engravings, stained-glass windows, when decorating dishes and dyeing fabrics.

The purpose of the visit of only a small part of the visitors of the historical building is the main institution at 25 Petrovka Street - the Museum of Modern Art with its permanent exhibition, although the Tsereteli's pictorial collection includes many outstanding works of the classics of the Russian avant-garde of the last century and the present.

Now there was an exhibition: Antonio Gaudi. Barcelona. The work of the architect of the capital of Catalonia appeared before the Russians for the first time.

The exhibition exposition is preceded by a description life path and the creative biography of Gaudi, made in chronological order.

Although the exhibition of the magnificent architect was not the original purpose of our review, it would be unforgivable to pass by such significant exhibits, because our readers can still have time to visit this rare event. The next slider shows pictures both from the exhibition and on the way to the Spanish materials.

You can see historical materials about the famous architect, his drawings and even models of cakes made by him - great masters are often unpredictable in the manifestations of their talents. By the way, confectionery decorations can be compared with mosaics, which Gaudí actively used in his works. The main exhibits, of course, are models of buildings built by him, as well as their images.

The exhibition presents a model of one of the most significant civil works of Antonio Gaudi - a residential building of the Barcelona Mila family, after which Gaudi completely switched to work on the project of the Church of the Atonement of the Holy Family - Sagrada Familia ..

The public nicknamed Mila's house, this peculiar bizarre structure, the Quarry (in Spanish La Pedrera) for the unusual constructive solution in general, as well as for the original construction of the supporting part and decoration.

Partially open interiors of the building show its internal structure, in which Gaudí innovatively applied a monolithic reinforced concrete structure, where the walls are not load-bearing elements.

You can see the layout of one of the best creations of the architect Gaudi - the famous house of the Mila family (Kamenolomni) at Petrovka 25 - the Museum of Modern Art organized an exhibition of his work.

The uneven walls of the building look like sea waves, and the wrought-iron lattices of the balconies are simply separate works of art. The house has two inner courtyards, where the windows of all apartments face in addition to communication with the street space. This allows you to do without air conditioning in the hottest weather.

The roof of the Quarry is decorated with many architectural elements, among which even films are being shot. In the old hall of the mansion-museum, a certain screen was placed above the model of an unusual house, either providing a reflection of the roof for inspection, or protecting a valuable exhibit from the collapse of particles of ceiling painting from an unfinished restoration.

An old Corinthian colonnade adorns one of the rooms of the Museum of Modern Art. This is the little that remains of the decorations of the former palace of the Ural breeder.

Further, our slider presents individual fragments of the exhibition, reflecting the main stages of Gaudí's work. You can see the architect's original set of drawing tools (prefab), as well as models of many buildings in Barcelona built according to his designs.
