Is the job of a librarian prestigious? Profession librarian. What is a librarian. What personal qualities should a librarian have?

  • 29.03.2020

Choosing a profession is not always easy and simple. Quite often, applicants experience certain difficulties with this issue before entering the university. Today we have to find out what a librarian does. This profession is not so common in the modern world, but it does take place. How can you be successful here? Who to study? What qualities are most valued in this area? All this remains to be learned further. True, not everyone will agree to build a career in our current field. After all, the profession also has disadvantages. You will have to learn about them in order not to make mistakes.

Who it

A librarian is a profession that, as already mentioned, is not very common in the modern world. Moreover, it is not so in demand when compared with the same IT technologies. Who is a librarian anyway?

Everyone has encountered such workers at least once in their life. Librarian - who works in the library. That is, a kind of "keeper of books." Also, such an employee is well versed in the literature and is able to quickly help citizens find the necessary information. In principle, there is nothing particularly difficult, as it seems, in the profession. Only working in the library is really hard work. A true and successful librarian is endowed with many qualities and skills. How to become such an employee?

Education

Well, like any other profession, ours today requires a certain education. Considering that the direction itself is not very popular among modern youth, then the choice of specialties for further employment as a librarian is not too large.

Usually preference is given to just the humanities. In particular, "Librarian", "Documentation", "Literature". Sometimes you can also meet "Culturology", "Philology". Rarely, but still there is such a specialty as "Management". Basically, good librarian not limited higher education, you can study it in a technical school. Exactly in the same directions.

On average, you will have to study like everyone else - 4.5-5 years. It does not matter what place will become your work - the central library, children's or any other. But the fact remains: you need to learn. In some cases, you can do without a "tower", only then the absence of a diploma should be covered by your personal knowledge and qualities. It is actually not so easy - to prove to the employer that you are a true librarian.

Where to work

Where can I go for employment after graduation or any other educational institution? To be honest, a librarian is a profession of a rather narrow focus. So, the choice here will not be too great. Yes, with the development of progress and technology, our current direction has more prospects, but they still do not greatly affect the place of work. Unless, new duties and responsibilities of the highest degree appear.

For example, your place of work can be This place of honor goes only to the best workers, and if there is already someone there, you should not particularly hope for employment. After all, few people will agree to "move over." The librarian, as a rule, is one for the whole institution. Or several of them (depending on the size of the building).

In addition, central and district libraries will now also be available for employment. In principle, it is quite a good option, especially if these establishments are located near your home. There is no significant difference between the central library and the state library. Only for the amount of work.

But in practice, librarians usually go to educational institutions to work. For example, school or university employees. There is a need for this kind of staff all the time. School librarian or government, it doesn't matter official duties in one place or another will be the same. In the same way that personal qualities are valued in these two completely different places the same. What will you have to do after you get a job?

Responsibilities

Working in a library is really a lot of work. After all, as already mentioned, only at first glance it seems that it is so easy to be this kind of employee. In fact, this is not so. Especially if you do not have aspirations and knowledge in literature and creativity. What should a librarian do?

This employee should sort books in a particular institution. He also searches and issues them, keeps order in the building.

Please note - the duties also include helping readers in finding the right literature, their advice. That is, in some cases it will be necessary to advise this or that book, suggest which source to turn to.

When new books arrive, you will have to process them. Accept, bring to the base, put in a specially designated place for them. Not the easiest thing to do, if you think about it. And if we consider that now there is a scientific e-library, then in general you can go crazy with the amount of work performed. If you have bothered to find a job where there is an electronic library, get ready - you will have to deal with its filling and maintenance completely. Not a system administrator, not a programmer, but a librarian. So, not everyone is able to cope with such a volume of work.

earnings

Of course, when finding employment (and choosing a direction for work), great attention is paid to such an indicator as wages. The higher it is, the more applicants and young professionals will strive for a particular profession. How are things with our current direction?

To be honest, not very good. The salary of a librarian, like that of most civil servants, as well as "state employees", is low. Both in Russia and in the capital. True, the difference is quite often felt.

On average, a librarian will earn about 6-9 thousand rubles. Not very much, right? And it doesn't matter if we have a rural librarian in front of us, or an ordinary city librarian. in Russia, such employees usually do not exceed 10,000 rubles. But the workload of this kind of employees is serious. And, as we have already seen, the amount of work that will have to be done, too. Not to mention workplace responsibility.

But in the capital, things are a little better. Not too much, but still better than nothing at all. A scientific electronic library or a state one - it doesn't matter where exactly you find a job. Please note that in Moscow or St. Petersburg you will have to work for about 15,000 rubles. More precisely, from 10 to 15 thousand. This is how much librarians in large cities of Russia receive. If we are talking about schools and universities, then usually the situation is no different from the general picture in Russia.

It turns out that the librarian is an important profession, but it is poorly paid. So, among applicants and already graduated specialists, it is not so in demand. With a high degree of probability, if you want to get a job as a librarian, then you will not have much competition. Judging by the statistics, about 60% of the population consider this direction not very important and widespread.

Contests

Despite all this, our current profession has some diversity. It will not only be necessary to rearrange books and deal with paperwork. Indeed, in Russia there is one very interesting competition. It's called Librarian of the Year. Every year across the country, the best librarians come together, showcase their knowledge, and compete for the title. the best employee in Russia.

Actually, it's very helpful. First, you will be engaged in self-development. Second, become famous person. Thirdly, usually the winners are given some kind of prizes and bonuses, cash payments and privileges. In addition, the best librarian usually earns a higher salary than everyone else. Although, for many, even the All-Russian annual competition is not an incentive for employment.

Certification

Among other things, from time to time, certification of librarians is carried out at the workplace. It would seem that there is no difficulty in sorting and distributing books, caring for them, and also issuing them. But our current profession, like any other, is still a responsible matter. And therefore, there is no escape from certification. If you don't pass it, you can go look for another job.

What will you have to prepare for? All libraries have their own rules for conducting the process, so it will not be possible to answer this question exactly. You should ask your employer about this nuance. However, some general principles will still take place. What exactly?

First, you will be tested on your knowledge of the range of books available in the library. Also during this period, an assessment of the effectiveness of your work is carried out. How well are you aware of what has become part of your life, your work? Certification will show.

Secondly, most likely, work with visitors will also be evaluated. How well you serve your readers. It is possible that for this idea you will be "thrown" a mystery visitor. Quite a popular technique that is used more and more often.

Thirdly, certification involves testing your knowledge. And literary. Not everywhere, but in very many places, the employer will conduct just such a check. As already mentioned, a good librarian is someone who understands literature. An uneducated, stupid, ignorant employee is a disgrace to the entire establishment.

But in practice, it is usually enough to simply show how you work, how well and efficiently you perform your duties. Remember, the more prestigious your place of work, the tougher the check will be. For example, the central library can hold her on all counts, and even find fault all the time. Nevertheless, given that there is little competition for employment, they will not “tyrannize” you much. Most likely, just pass the symbolic certification "for show".

Qualities

A reference to a librarian is usually given at your previous place of work. Well, or at the university where you studied. If you can’t take it anywhere, it’s just enough to present a resume when applying for a job. And indicate your personal qualities there. The ones every librarian should have. To be honest, there are quite a few points. What are they? What is recommended to include in a resume when applying for a job in a library?

Literary skills and aspirations are the first and most important thing that can be singled out. The qualities of a librarian are inconceivable without knowledge of literature. After all, she is the one to work with. No one will hire an uninformed employee. So, indicate that you know what you will be working with.

Stress resistance is another equally important characteristic. It plays a role in any profession. A nervous and unbalanced person is hired without much desire. And when it comes to libraries - even more so. After all given place is a storehouse of knowledge, peace and tranquility.

Quick learner, ability to perform - that's what a good librarian needs. This is especially true for the second point. Working in the library is a constant monotonous work, which is not subject to everyone. So if you don't know how to follow the instructions for a long time If you need a "glade" for creativity and self-development, you will have to give up the profession. There is no need to talk about fast learning.

Openness, friendliness, discipline are the qualities of a librarian, which also become extremely important. It is not very pleasant to come to the library and chat with the "manager" there, who is clearly not happy to see a visitor. Friendliness is the key to success in almost any direction of our life. If a person is open and friendly, it is pleasant to communicate with him. And this will not scare off readers, they will be pleased to visit this or that institution.

Initiative, composure, restraint, self-control - these are other points that should not be forgotten. For many, librarians are associated with strict, self-possessed people who keep themselves "in This status was invented for a reason. Indeed, a good librarian will be distinguished not only by education, but also by endurance. Every self-respecting employee should have these qualities.

pros

It is not so important which place has become your "refuge" when building a career - a state library, a district library or a simple school one. After all, every profession has its pros and cons. They do not really depend on the place of work. What are the benefits of our current direction?

If you are, then you can only rejoice. The library is a place that will become your second home. Here you can work and have fun, develop and improve your literary knowledge.

If you do not have quick fatigue, are able to do monotonous work for a long time, then this place of work will seem like a paradise to you. In fact, an active and proactive person can easily cope with the burden that falls on the shoulders of a librarian.

A lot of free time is the quality that most employees emphasize. Keeping order in the hall is usually obtained from your desktop (place, reception). And, in general, most of the time will have to sit either at the computer (they are now everywhere), or simply at the documents and a desk. You can go about your business in peace. For example, a side job.

Not always, as already mentioned, you need a higher education for employment. The librarian's instruction indicates more that you should be simply an educated and cultured person with skills and knowledge in literature. So, everyone has job prospects. Not to mention the low level of competition.

Flaws

True, the shortcomings of the direction are also more than enough. And one point plays an important role. Of course, we are talking about wages. She, as already mentioned, is low. Both in Russia and in the capitals. If you compare it with the load and responsibility that will be placed on your shoulders, then in the library you will simply lose time.

The lack of prospects for advancement and career development also leaves its mark on the popularity and demand for the profession of a librarian. No career ladder not in this area. Therefore, to some extent, this direction can be called unpromising.

It has already been said about the load. Yes, quite often you can during labor day mind your own business - earn extra money at the computer, read, embroider, and so on (especially if your boss is not following you, the main thing is to keep order in the building and respond to the first call of visitors), but there are times when the real rush happens. And then the amount of work and responsibility simply does not compare with your salary.

As you can see, a librarian is a profession that is not very popular among specialists. It requires special responsibility, knowledge and skills in literature. Only the real lover of creativity and books will be able to work in the library on a permanent basis. Rather, it is not even a profession, but a vocation!

Perhaps each of us at least once was in the library. And let's see how the library actually works, find out which way the book goes before it falls into the hands of the reader. Let's look into the rooms that are closed to ordinary visitors, find out how books are delivered to the reading room, and the most secret room, which not even all library staff have access to, is in the book depository.

So, the reader goes to the National Library:

And immediately we get to the registration desk, where he is issued a library card (the cost is symbolic - only 50 rubles for 5 years):

We apply the ticket and go through and go to the desired reading room. But first, let's get acquainted with the department where all new books go. This sector of scientific document processing:

Information on all new books must be entered into a computer program - a cataloger, all this is done manually:

Each employee processes about 20-30 books per day (yes, they have their own monthly plan). As of today, there are 485,000 entries in the electronic catalog of the National Library of Order! Here is the submission queue:

Pay attention to how many fields you need to fill in for each book:

By the way, here a stamp is placed on the same 17th page:

In addition, a unique barcode is affixed to each book and an internal number is assigned:

Here is the book "Flicker of the Elven Portal", what is it about? So I don’t know, and if this department had not entered detailed information into the program, then no one would ever have found it:

Each book has three codes. The lowest code "1311430" is the internal code of the book in this library, it was assigned in the previous department. And the top two codes are assigned in accordance with the generally accepted library and bibliographic classification:

Previously, library cards were transferred from Moscow:

Today they are printed on the spot:

The library card contains necessary information according to the book, without fail contains desired codes, by which library staff can find it:

So, back to the reading room. In the National Library, they are divided by subject. The reader, using the alphabetical catalog, finds a card for the desired book, writes down its internal number, author and title:

Based on this information, the librarian searches for the book. The most popular ones are stored here, in the reading room, and the rest are in the book depository. If the desired book is in the book depository, a department employee sends a request for delivery via computer. Previously, such requests were written down on a piece of paper, folded into a “bobbin” and thrown down a special pipe.

The bookstore is located in basement building, and we go there to monitor how our request will be processed.

The book depository is divided into several separate cabinets (this was done for security purposes). Special fire-fighting systems with fine-fine spray are installed here so as not to damage the books:

To store books, it is important to observe a certain temperature and humidity, this is monitored by an automated system:

Shelves with books are located on rails, and with a slight rotation of the handle they can be moved:

Using these numbers, the employee finds the right rack and then looks for the right book. At the same time, books in book depositories are not grouped by category or alphabetically, they are mixed and ordered only by internal number:

Therefore, it is important for the reader to correctly rewrite the desired number. If this is not done, and the employee cannot find the right book, then he starts searching for it in the computer database, trying to determine the correct book number (by title, author, etc.). If you don’t receive an order for a long time, then don’t swear, but rather thank the employee for their help, because most likely you yourself are to blame

Rails are laid throughout the library, along which teleelevator carts move:

The desired book is placed in the trolley, the number of the trolley and the name of the department where it should deliver this book is indicated on the touch screen:

Telelift shaft:

By the way, any reader of the library can observe how the telelift works. part of the route runs along the corridor:

The smart system automatically prompts the employee that he is running out of empty carts and offers to order a couple. We order and in a couple of minutes she arrives:

We return to the reading room, where the necessary book has already been delivered.

All computers in the reading rooms are equipped with a scanner, which first scans the library card, and then the book - thus, the program records that the book has been issued to the reader. When returning, similar operations are performed.

Having received the necessary literature, you can go to the reading room. Here the library works and this is how the book gets to the reader.

I work in a library

“A successful library career depends on
from three things - character, special knowledge and experience "
Melville Dewey

Working in the library is a very exciting "adventure", everyday learning of something new and constant communication with people. Working as a librarian, you unwittingly also become a psychologist in some way: you get to know the literary tastes of the reader, you know which books to advise him in this or that situation. And such qualities of a real librarian as: kindness, ability to listen, keep up the conversation, make my profession special and people need. I already know how to meet library visitors, how to help them become spiritually familiar with literature, how to ease the difficult choice among a huge number of publications.
I have been working as a librarian for 17 years (at MBUK CGB for almost a year). Our library hosts a large number of events (including those that we (librarians) prepare and conduct ourselves). With their help, I get even closer to the world of literature, I feel the commonality of cultures of different nationalities, the unity of peoples, and much, much more.

I love my job. It has always been interesting and exciting for me. Every year I master the art of librarianship more and more, never cease to be amazed at the diversity of this work, and never cease to admire it.

Can a librarian be a full interlocutor of a reader? What kind of reader is the librarian himself - a person who has the moral right to choose books for others and should be a recognized authority in their eyes? Ideally, a librarian reads not only for himself, but also for work. He must always think of those readers to whom this book may be useful. You can consider your advice in choosing a book successful when, after advising it to readers, you see that it made a proper impression on them, they liked it.

I work in a library

I work in a library. Every working day for me is new discoveries and new knowledge. I love to devote my time to work, inventing new interesting events. I like to communicate with people of all ages, perhaps this is one of the global pluses in the profession of a librarian. The curiosity of kids, the criticality of teenagers, the activity of young people and the wisdom of older people - all portraits of personalities, features of ages, like a picture of the world, are before the eyes of any library employee.

My work for me is nothing more than an opportunity to observe people, to capture the subtleties of their character, and analyze them. Thus, by studying other people, I get to know myself more deeply. And the process of knowing oneself is a fertile ground for personal growth and self-improvement of the spirit, first of all.

Studying the intricacies of my business, I understand that not only the world around me can do a lot for me, but I can also do a lot of good for the world around me. After all, a book is the best teacher. And I have the opportunity to provide everyone with my most wonderful teacher in the world. Because I work in the library.

Vanyukova Lydia

I work in a library.

This story began a long time ago when, at the age of five, my parents took me to the library for the first time. Then I remember the twilight between the shelves, the intoxicating smell of book pages and a large fern on the windowsill. It was very quiet and somehow solemn. Readers went one by one, and each took away a book with them. I especially remember one reader who for a long time could not choose a book to his liking. And the librarian, a dark-haired woman with gold-rimmed glasses, told him in a low voice about books he might like. Then it seemed to me that she had read all the books in the world - her voice was so confident, she knew so much about books and their authors.

Many years have passed since then. And now I myself stand at the issuance department and tell readers about books and authors. I have not yet read all the books in the world, and it is impossible, but I try to find for each reader the book that he will like and remember.

Many people think that working in the library is boring - just sit all day and lend out books. No, it's not like that. Working in the library is a daily self-development.

A modern librarian must not only know the authors and titles of books, be able to use catalogs and file cabinets, but also must love to read, follow book novelties and be aware of all the events in the world of literature. The modern librarian should be a good psychologist, because often people come to the library just for the sake of communication, to solve their problems or just to relax. Properly and on time, a book offered can help a person better than any therapy.

A modern librarian must also be a teacher, because children come to the library who need to be taught to love books and the printed word. A modern librarian must constantly work on himself, constantly improve his professional level, learn something new and strive to transfer his knowledge to others.

The question arises: why does the librarian owe something all the time? Yes, because a librarian is not a profession, but a way of life. If you stop, stop moving forward, then the flow of life will slow down, lose color and taste. The library does not tolerate “outsiders”, random people do not stay here, and those who stay open thousands of worlds for their readers every day. Thanks to libraries and librarians, the culture of reading is reaching a new level. Reading has become fashionable, prestigious, noble. The library unites people, and this is exactly what is lacking in the digital age.

Ermakova Oksana

"I'm in the profession in ... years"

Thinking about the future, it is difficult to assess the correctness and possibility of your judgments. Undoubtedly, everything that looks in an ideal light, and this is how the future most often appears to us, attracts. But, is this the future? What are the creator's thoughts on this? And is a person so constant in his judgments? The future is unsteady and therefore inaccessible to the human mind, and only a heart capable of a noble feeling is able to catch an invisible thread connecting the present and the future.

The topic for my reasoning, I chose "I am in the profession through ...". In my view, the library is a repository of the wisdom of mankind, a huge mysterious world full of adventures and new ideas, a place for leisure, a place for acquaintances and pleasant communication. Of course, the library plays a role in the life of every person. She suddenly entered my life, after a month of work, I still did not understand that I was working in a library. Everything seemed strange and unusual. At the moment, about a month has passed, and ideas about the library and the specifics of the work have expanded significantly. And what will happen if you imagine that I work in the library for a whole year?

A typical June day.
I'm not too lazy to get ready for work.
Leaving the house, I walk stubbornly, books, kids and plans are waiting for me,
Exhibitions, meetings, reports, analysis.
Website, form, bibliographic record,
Card files and funds, racks and publications,
Subject headings, links, descriptions.
References, consultations, conversations about books,
Overview lecture, but let ... About dolphins!
Time passed 12 hours
Need a break? But better without words! *
I'm back to my business again.
The computer keeps sticking and sticking to your hands.
I'm not sitting in the clouds myself,
And in them I keep a report on the cases.
How much, when and what did they ask for?
That's tired, but there is still strength!
Again I stand boldly in the pulpit:
"Hello, reader!" - I shout skillfully.
The thoughtful little boy looks:
“I would like a fairy tale ... well, the one about Finger!”
Joyfully, I approach the racks,
I'm looking for Charles Perrault among the shelves,
A fraction of a second - and here, - voila,
The book is already in my hands.
Proudly I carry a tricky book,
Number, department, I'll write it down, and not too much
Will ask Chenille Vova:
"When are you going to the library again?"
Statistics are waiting, and I'm not sitting,
I'm looking for help through the halls.
The time is approaching five imperceptibly.
Now it all starts
And then they come in!
Fans of the club "I am a theater" *
And here I am in a suit: "Let's go to the ball!"
Thank you, colleagues, we are in time.
Now about the event wonderful lines:
Today is the premiere of the play "Ural",
The invasion of the spectator into the festive hall.
The guys are shaking and sighing nervously,
And I blink at them that, they say: “Let's start!”
Backstage, well, those that were sewn with the guys,
open wide,
And here we are in a special world!
The history of the motherland flows in verse,
And so I am glad, I stand all in tears.
Talented, lively and very plastic
Irishka is playing, everything is going great,
But if only Petya from 5 B
I forgot about the clue that in the right hand.
And then it's Pete's turn,
I'm not breathing and standing in red color,
And Petya broadcasts noisily from the stage,
And so they hands went, so playfully!
A moment ... and a crumpled sheet flew out,
And right under my feet a few lines.
I'm in amazement, I'm all pale,
I read: "Fix the spotlights on the left."
Quietly changing the malleable light
The game continues, there is no danger!
The eyes of Zateinova Sveta do not squint
And Valya Kotenov does not whisper to her, "Where are you?"
All in places, artists Hurray!
The hour-long GAME is coming to an end!
"Happy premiere guys!" I say in my heart
Thanks for the courage, for the honesty,
I love!
My work day is over, and I
In costume and thoughts, that's how it goes!
Today a dream has come true
Our performance came to life, and I came to life.
Prepared for a long time, worked hard
And in the future we will, because this is the beginning!
I sit down for a report and I look at the plan,
After all, tomorrow is so close and I'm all trembling.
"Favorite Band" kindergarten
Will come, and it is necessary to tell about cats!
Well, friends, it's time for me to go home.
And books about cats under my armpit with me.
In the evening I sit in a comfortable armchair,
I live to think
I'm interested!
I glue and cut, draw and paint.
The evening went well. I forgot about porridge!
The stove rustled, and she playfully:
“Well, what are you, dear, pouring water past ?!”
My husband looks at me sadly.
“Tired, poor thing, today is mine?”
I laugh and happily say to him:
“I love my work endlessly!”
1 * (meaning the proverb: “When I eat, I am deaf and dumb”)
2* (“I am a theatrical” - I plan to create a club of theater lovers on the basis of the library and work with children on staging performances)

I work in a library

The librarian is very ancient profession which has existed for more than four thousand years. The first librarians of antiquity were scribes who collected clay tablets several thousand years ago. This profession used to be considered an exclusively male craft. Now representatives of the beautiful half of humanity most often become a librarian.

I never thought that I would become a librarian. I got into this profession by accident. My beloved little daughter once came to the library with a kindergarten for a mass event, and she absolutely loved it. Less than a week later, she took my hand, brought me here, and from that moment on she became a regular reader. She greedily “swallowed” the books one by one, and I helped her with the choice. One fine day, the door of our apartment opened, my daughter came in and from the threshold enthusiastically began to talk about the fact that there was an advertisement for the vacancy of a librarian in the library. She almost screamed: “Mom, you must work in the library! It's so great!” I decided to try because working with children has always brought me pleasure.

Of course, I knew little about this profession. I understood that it, like any other, has its own difficulties and peculiarities.

Every profession has its own myths. The accountant is always a boring lady with glasses, the driver constantly smells of gasoline, and the doctors, as one, learned calligraphy from a chicken. There is also a myth about the librarian. This is an elderly lady in a long faded shawl who knits socks for her grandchildren or reads a book while sitting at the pulpit. She is smart, well-read, but a little out of this world, immersed in the book world, and real world does not know. Have you heard this description? If you ask a few people who do not visit the library about how they imagine this specialist, then most will draw a similar portrait. And only after looking inside and talking, they will understand how far from the truth.

Many are sure that giving out books and putting them on the shelves is the function for which the librarian comes to work every day. But this is the tip of the iceberg, the rest, as a rule, remains behind the scenes. For example, holding public events. This part of the job is my favorite. After all, holding any such event is a public speaking, a lesson, and self-improvement in a certain area. And in order to go to the children, you need to read several sources of information, choose the most Interesting Facts, think over the form of submission, prepare for possible tricky questions.

Without the ability to analyze and process a large amount of data, one cannot do without purposefulness. Holding a mass event is work for the result, and here it is important to find contact with the audience, to be sensitive and responsive, to learn to feel the mood of the audience. Without all these qualities, it is impossible to make the event useful and entertaining.

It seems to me that libraries have ceased to be just a repository of books, they have become a place of communication, socialization and satisfaction of information hunger. Many of my friends are perplexed when they hear about where I now work. The image of a librarian - a blue stocking - firmly sits in their head. But this image does not fit with what they know about me. And then acquaintances begin to ask a lot of questions: what else does someone go there, and what are you doing there, and are you bored there, and there are new books there, and what kind of public events. They are surprised again and again when they hear the answers, and come to see everything with their own eyes. Today, the task of a librarian, in my opinion, is not so much to preserve and increase the fund, but to help the visitor become a reader. And the library will become a place where you want to return, a place you want to talk about.

I work in a library

Who is a modern librarian? Many people think that this is a boring person who is behind the times. But a child specialist must have a large stock of knowledge to help the reader understand the ocean of information. The image of the library is created by the people who work in it.

We hold many literary and musical holidays, games, concerts, presentations. All these events are not just entertaining, but they always have an educational character, as well as a desire to surprise with information, “enchant” with a book, and awaken imagination.

Children say that a librarian should know everything. Otherwise, will he answer the question of a curious boy about which book about football is the most interesting, which is the best magazine to advise a fashionista girl, or will he offer a sensational article to an amateur flower grower.

I always enjoy the opportunity to give the reader an answer to almost any question. And not because I am so omniscient, but because I have at hand a huge number of my true friends - books. I do not work as a librarian, I work as a sorceress who opens the pantry of knowledge.

We, librarians, have a special mission, a special purpose! Being with books, we are their guides. We give people the best that we have and what we can do, without thinking about recognition and profit. This is our destiny, joy and meaning of our life.

I work in a library.

Library. For many people, when they hear this word, stacks of books with pages yellowed from time grow up in their mind's eye. But really, is everything so static, unchanging in this world of a storehouse of human wisdom?

In the memoirs of my mother, 30-35 years ago, in order to prepare material for an abstract or report, the only way was a visit to the library, most often especially valuable thoughts could be found on the shelves of the reading room.

But time moves forward and now the Internet has contained billions of books. Now it is worth typing only a word in the search line and your eyes will see a sea of information options.

Are libraries now a thing of the past? No. You will ask why?

Firstly, the most valuable information on the Internet is paid, and the library is a budget option open to millions.

Secondly, in the library you will find live communication with friendly attitude. And even if you are an adherent of the Internet, here you will be advised by a site where you can find a book that interests you.

Thirdly, it is in the library club that you can find new friends - like-minded people and your evenings will no longer be boring, life will sparkle with new colors.

Therefore, we can confidently say that libraries were, are and will be!!!

Who are librarians?

Who are librarians? The answer to this question is pronounced with a condescending smile: "Gray mice that give out books." The variability of these words is different, but this smile, it will certainly be on the lips of the respondent. This stereotype has ingrained itself in the minds in the same way as in the minds of Americans that the streets of our long-suffering Motherland were filled with bears, and we, with a balalaika in one hand and a bottle of vodka in the other, go to the store for a portrait of Stalin, although, in the light of recent events , most likely the portrait will be Putin. But the stereotype about librarians has another side - the stereotype about the reader. “Modern man is far from books”, “children do not read”, “people become illiterate”. Yes, “50 Shades of Gray” has become the most popular book in the world, and that’s all, in fact, what you need to know about modern humanity, but, on the other hand, millions of people have read this book, millions of people have come and asked the library: “There are do you have this book? In the 21st century, the literary world has become so big that the modern reader has choked and drowned in it. Maybe librarians are the lifeline of readers? After all, who, if not a librarian, can lead them to good literature.

Who are librarians? Life has become so fast, the expression "running time" can no longer explain how quickly the years pass, an era is coming when time flies. And one life is not enough. Therefore, isn’t it wonderful that a person has the opportunity, thanks to a book, to live several lives with the characters, sometimes to visit fantastically fabulous places, or, on the contrary, to plunge into the world of desperate hopelessness, so that the heart is touched by compassion, the look is cleared, and the soul is stirred towards new thoughts and experiences. And who, if not a librarian, knows how to understand and appreciate this side of the book, to show that life can and should be measured not by inhalation and exhalation, but by bated breath?

Who are librarians? The answer is hidden between books, between thousands of stories and millions of destinies. “The author only writes half of the book; the reader writes the other half,” says Joseph Conrad. The author, a really good one, leaves his readers many reasons for reflection after reading his book, makes their minds intensely look for answers that would help to understand the nature of their favorite characters, explain the motives of their actions, or, through understanding the hero, come to the consciousness of their own " I” and there is no comprehension, not the meaning of human existence, but to the awareness of one’s place in life. But who, if not a librarian, will help them with this? Who, if not a librarian, will help them finish the story of their heroes and continue their own?

Who are librarians? You can endlessly speculate and speculate, or you can try to become one.

I work in a library

“I work in the library” - I answer all my friends who ask about where I got a job. So I can say that a librarian is a person who not only gives out books, but also communicates with readers, wins them over, also keeps daily statistics, records periodicals, holds public events both in his library and at the city level participates in various competitions and events. Also, a librarian is a well-read, well-versed in many areas of knowledge person who can help find interesting and necessary literature. Many librarians, myself included, work on the program. My program "The book opens its treasures", I go to kindergartens and introduce the children to the authors of children's books, and at the end of the lesson the children do a creative task. Not a single lesson leaves children and educators indifferent, each time they are waiting for new meetings. It is very nice when the guys take their parents and bring them to the library to enroll. Then I understand that my work is not in vain.

Many say that printed book will soon supplant such things as: e-book, tablet, computer, internet. And the work of libraries will soon be of no use to anyone. I believe that the love of a book can only be cultivated with the help of a printed book. No tablet can compare with "live" reading. To feel the book, the cover, turning the pages, looking at the illustrations. It seems to me that reading from a tablet or from an e-book is like reading on the go, there is little benefit from reading. And if a small child reads a fairy tale before going to bed from a tablet, what can the child remember? Screen? Buttons? And no matter how hard my mother tries to expressively read a fairy tale, she is unlikely to succeed in cultivating a love for a book.

My opinion - no printed book will replace electronic books. Libraries should not be forgotten by the administration, but rather maintain interest in them. After all, educating a reading generation is one of the main tasks of libraries.

I am a librarian

If I had been told in 2007, when I graduated from high school, that a few years later I would work in the library, I would probably have twisted my head. Despite the fact that all my childhood was spent in the library, I never thought about becoming a librarian.

For a long time I could not answer the question "Who to be?". Therefore, before becoming a librarian, I managed to work as a designer in a furniture company and even become a senior manager there, but this work did not bring me enough pleasure. The only thing that kept me in that job was the salary and the wonderful team that I helped create. One day, my fiancé told me that it was time to quit and find a job he liked, as he saw that there was absolutely no enthusiasm in my eyes.

My mother - Alena Yuryevna Khmylova - is a librarian of branch No. 2. It was she who suggested that I try to find myself in the role of a librarian, she always said that I should like working here. And no matter how a mother knows what she wants and what her child can do. So I came to the library not as a guest, but already as an employee.

Mass events are the most favorite thing in my work. I work with preschoolers and high schoolers. Seemingly completely different age groups but there are similarities between them. For example, if at the beginning of the lesson you correctly and correctly explain the rules of communication between children and the librarian, tell in what form the lesson will take place, then with a probability of 99.9% neither high school students nor preschoolers will start making noise, spinning and ignoring you. Another similarity - the questions of both groups can drive you into a dead end. Sometimes, you prepare for the event for several days, and then you wait for some tricky question. And the most important similarity between the groups is that the result of your work is absolutely unpredictable. Perhaps, having gone out the door, they will forget that polar bears and penguins live in different parts of the world, or that maltodextrin in the composition of products suggests the content of GMOs in them, or maybe then one of them will become a biologist or zoologist ?

But, despite all this, you remember each of your readers. Remember that he likes to read, that he would like to read, what he is interested in.

Now I am a 4th year student of the correspondence department of the Ural Federal University, I am a future specialist in working with youth. And now I can’t say where I see myself in 5 years, where I will work, but I know for sure that without my students and readers I will have a hard time.

I like my work, I get sincere pleasure, introducing myself to new acquaintances “Catherine, librarian!” And I can say with confidence that I am happy at work.

Virgo, I thought something: is it true that more than 14 thousand rubles is a good salary for a librarian with a tower ???
I've just been working for 20 years, and my salary always seemed small to me :))

Although more and more people read books using electronic media information, interest in the truly printed word does not fade at all. Each, even the smallest city, has its own library serving several thousand readers. Librarians are in charge of vast intellectual book depositories.

From the outside, it may seem that all the work of a librarian is to issue forms and fill out registration forms. In fact, this is far from the case. A librarian is a qualified specialist who must be well versed in the range of books, be a philologist and a bit of a historian.

Responsibilities of a Librarian

The librarian is directly involved in the formation of the book fund, orders new copies of books, analyzes and monitors the emergence of new literary talents. At the same time, his duties also include the repair of old books (which can sometimes be antique and even have historical significance), and write off completely unusable ones. After receiving new ones, the librarian sorts them and catalogs them.

The specialist must know the rules for storing books, if possible, ensure the necessary conditions for long term use. Some antique pieces require special conditions of increased care.

Without a doubt, the main requirement for a bibliologist is an excellent knowledge of literature in all its diversity and huge quantity.

Moreover, the librarian should be aware of not only the books of the direction that he is interested in, but also all the others that readers may ask about. A specialist will often have to prompt people for works based on their preferences, wishes and level of intellectual development.

The ability to work with a computer is a must for a modern librarian. In most institutions, all readers' forms and catalogs have long been computerized, so it will be difficult for a person who is far from understanding the simplest programs to adapt to this process.

Is it hard to be a librarian?

The profession of a librarian is specific and requires a certain type of character from a person. If he fanatically loves books, is erudite, accurate and attentive, then such a specialist will really be in his place.

However, in the work of a bibliologist there are some negative points, which can develop into difficulties: an abundance of clerical work, which is tiring and requires high level concentration, as well as constant communication with people. Of course, visitors are different, and some of them can make you nervous.

Do not miss:

Pros and cons of being a librarian

Advantages:

  • The profession of a bookkeeper is by no means boring. A specialist can simultaneously engage in scientific activities, the study of historical works, participate in the organization of exhibitions and excursions;
  • communication mainly with interesting educated people;
  • suitable work for lovers of reading.

Flaws:

  • low salary;
  • In the modern world, the relevance of paper books is gradually declining. The future prospects of the profession are not clear.

The profession of a librarian can hardly be called a careerist, but still there are certain steps on the ladder. The top of the career is the head of the library, if the institution is large enough, then the head of the department is one of the intermediate options. In addition, there are many other options for development: the head of a media library, a thematic publication, an organizer of an educational project.

In the profession of a librarian, there is one dangerous moment - a stop in professional development. Routine work can make the most assiduous person bored. It is worth remembering this, and not stop there.
